どうやら/どうも〜らしい/ようだ

どうやら/どうも〜らしい/ようだ

it seems that (from what I can tell)

どうやら and どうも are adverbs that go together with a guessing ending such as らしい, ようだ or みたいだ. They show that the speaker is not sure, but is guessing from what he or she sees, hears or feels. どうも often adds the feeling "I can't say exactly why, but…". The adverb comes early in the sentence, so the listener knows that a guess is coming.

どうやら道をまちがえたらしい。

どうやらみちをまちがえたらしい。

It seems that I took the wrong road.

Structure

どうやら / どうも + clause + らしい / ようだ / みたいだ (casual). らしい: plain form of verb / い-adjective + らしい; な-adjective stem / noun + らしい (no だ). ようだ: plain form of verb / い-adjective + ようだ; な-adjective + な + ようだ; noun + の + ようだ. みたいだ: plain form of verb / い-adjective + みたいだ; な-adjective stem / noun + みたいだ (no だ, no な, no の).

Common mistakes

3
  • Ending the sentence as a plain fact. どうやら and this use of どうも need a guessing ending. ✗ どうやら彼は来ません → ✓ どうやら彼は来ないようです / どうやら彼は来ないらしいです.
  • Wrong connection before the ending. ✗ どうやら留守だらしい → ✓ どうやら留守らしい (no だ before らしい). ✗ どうやら留守なようだ → ✓ どうやら留守のようだ (noun + の + ようだ). ✗ どうも元気だみたいだ → ✓ どうも元気みたいだ.
  • Thinking that どうも always means "it seems". どうも has other uses: どうもありがとう (thank you very much) and どうも〜ない (just can't…), as in どうも分からない (I just can't understand it). Look at the end of the sentence: when it ends in a guessing form such as らしい / ようだ / みたいだ, どうも means "it seems".

How it's different from similar grammar

2
まるで〜ようだ/〜みたいだ (just like, as if)
Both adverbs go with ようだ / みたいだ, but the meaning is different. まるで makes a comparison with something that is not really true: あの人はまるで先生のようだ (That person is just like a teacher — but is not a teacher). どうやら makes a real guess: あの人はどうやら先生のようだ (That person seems to be a teacher — I think he or she really is one). Also, まるで usually does not go with らしい.
〜そうです (hearsay: I heard that)
Hearsay 〜そうだ passes on information that you heard or read, as it is: 天気予報によると、午後から雪が降るそうだ (According to the forecast, it will snow from the afternoon). どうやら〜らしい / ようだ is the speaker's own guess from the situation: 外が白くなってきた。どうやら雪が降っているらしい (It is getting white outside. It seems to be snowing). どうやら is usually not used together with hearsay 〜そうだ.

How this shows up on the JLPT

N3 grammar-form questions test the pairing of adverb and sentence ending. If you see どうやら or どうも at the start, look for らしい / ようだ / みたいだ at the end; if the blank is the adverb, check the ending first (まるで〜ようだ is a comparison, けっして needs a negative, ぜひ needs a wish or request). In text-grammar and reading questions, どうやら signals that the writer is guessing from evidence, not reporting a fact.
