〜らしい（推量・伝聞）

Verb plain form + らしい (降るらしい / 来ないらしい / できたらしい). い-adjective plain form + らしい (おもしろいらしい). な-adjective stem + らしい (安全らしい — no だ, no な). Noun + らしい (医者らしい — no だ, no の). The past of な-adjectives and nouns is 〜だったらしい (大変だったらしい). The negative is made before らしい: 来ないらしい, 医者じゃないらしい. らしい changes like an い-adjective: らしいです (polite).

• Adding だ or な before らしい after a noun or な-adjective. ✕ 彼は学生だらしいです ✕ あの町は静かならしいです → ○ 彼は学生らしいです ○ あの町は静からしいです. Be careful: the hearsay そうです needs だ (学生だそうです), but らしい does not.
• Making らしい itself negative when you mean 'apparently ... not'. ✕ 山田さんは来るらしくないです → ○ 山田さんは来ないらしいです. Put the negative in the part before らしい. (〜らしくない belongs to the N3 meaning 'not typical of': 学生らしくない.)
• Using らしい for something you are judging directly with your own eyes right now. If you look at dark clouds, 雨が降りそうです is natural. 雨が降るらしいです usually sounds as if you got the information from somewhere else, such as a forecast or another person.

〜そうです (hearsay)

Both can report what you heard. そうです simply passes on the information as it was heard, and the source is usually clear: 田中さんは来月結婚するそうです (I heard that Mr. Tanaka is getting married next month). らしい adds the speaker's own judgment 'it is probably so', and the source can be vague, like a rumor: 田中さんは来月結婚するらしいです (Apparently Mr. Tanaka is getting married next month). The form is also different: 休みだそうです (with だ) / 休みらしいです (without だ).

〜ようだ / 〜みたいだ (conjecture)

ようだ and みたいだ are mostly used when the speaker judges from what they saw, heard, or felt directly: 田中さんは忙しいようです (Mr. Tanaka seems busy — I saw him running around the office). らしい is mostly used when the judgment comes from information received from others: 田中さんは忙しいらしいです (Apparently Mr. Tanaka is busy — a coworker told me).

In grammar-form questions, らしい often appears next to そうだ, ようだ, and みたいだ in the choices. First check the connection: after a noun or な-adjective with no だ, な, or の, the answer can be らしい or みたい (休みらしい), but not the hearsay そうだ (休みだそうだ) or ようだ (休みのようだ). Then check the context: words such as 〜によると, 〜の話では, うわさでは, ニュースで point to information from outside, so らしい or the hearsay そうだ fits. In reading passages, らしい tells you that the writer did not check the fact directly. Do not mix it up with the N3 use in 子どもらしい (childlike).
