This pattern compares one thing to another thing that is similar: 'like A'. のような describes a noun, and のように describes a verb or an adjective. It is also used to give an example of a kind of thing: 東京のような大きい町 (a big city such as Tokyo). This is a different use from ようだ for a guess and from ように for a purpose.
§1Structure
Noun A + のような + noun B (春のような日 = a day like spring). Noun A + のように + verb / い-adjective / な-adjective (鳥のように飛ぶ, ジュースのように甘い). At the end of a sentence: noun + のようだ / のようです (夢のようです). の is always needed between the noun and よう.
§2Examples

§3Common mistakes
- Dropping の after the noun. ✕ 春ような日 ✕ 鳥ように飛びたい → ○ 春のような日 ○ 鳥のように飛びたい. With the casual みたい, の is not used (春みたいな日), so learners often mix the two patterns.
- Mixing up ような and ように. ような comes before a noun, and ように comes before a verb or an adjective. ✕ 夏のような暑いです → ○ 夏のように暑いです. ✕ 夏のように日です → ○ 夏のような日です.
- Reading every ように as 'like'. Noun + のように means 'like' (先生のように話す = speak like a teacher). Verb dictionary form / ない-form + ように shows a purpose (忘れないようにメモする = take a note so that I won't forget). Look at what comes before ように.
§4How it's different from similar grammar
- 〜みたいな / 〜みたいに (casual 'like')
- The meaning is the same, but みたい is casual and takes no の: 母みたいな人 / 母みたいに料理が上手だ. のような / のように is more neutral and can also be used in writing and in polite situations: 母のような人 / 母のように料理が上手です.
- 〜と同じ (the same as)
- と同じ says that two things are the same: 私は姉と同じかばんを持っています (I have the same bag as my older sister). のような only says that they are similar: 私は姉のようなかばんがほしいです (I want a bag like my older sister's). It may be a different bag that looks similar.
§5How this shows up on the JLPT
In grammar-form questions, the choices are often ような / ように / ようだ (sometimes with みたいな / みたいに). Look at the word right after the blank: a noun → のような, a verb or adjective → のように, the end of the sentence → のようだ. Also check that の is there after the noun. In sentence-building questions (the ★ type), keep the block [noun] + の + ような + [noun] or [noun] + の + ように + [verb / adjective] together. In reading passages, のように can mean a comparison, and ように after a verb can mean a purpose, so check what stands before it.
§6Quick check (3 questions)
1. Choose the best form for the blank: 今日は、春__天気ですね。
きょうは、はる__てんきですね。
2. Which sentence is correct?
3. In which sentence does ように mean 'like' (a comparison)?
