〜ように(目的)

ように

so that... (a state comes about)

← All N4 grammar pointsTiếng Việt

A ように B means 'do B so that A becomes true'. A is a goal state, such as being able to do something, something being visible or clear, or something bad not happening. B is what you do to reach that state. Compare it with ために, which is used when A is an action you decide to do yourself.

§1Structure

Verb dictionary form + ように, or verb ない-form + ように. The verb before ように is normally one that the speaker's will does not control: a potential form (読めるように, 行けるように), verbs such as わかる, 見える, 聞こえる, なる, 治る, or a ない-form (忘れないように, 遅れないように). The second clause is an action that the speaker does on purpose.

§3Common mistakes

  • Putting the dictionary form of your own intentional action before ように. ✕ 日本で働くように、日本語を勉強しています. If the goal is an action you decide to do, use ために: ○ 日本で働くために、日本語を勉強しています. If you want to keep ように, change the verb to the potential form: ○ 日本で働けるように、日本語を勉強しています.
  • Using ために with a potential verb or a verb like わかる / 見える. ✕ 漢字が読めるために、毎日練習します ✕ みんなに見えるために、大きく書きます → ○ 漢字が読めるように ○ みんなに見えるように. These verbs show a state, not an action you choose, so they take ように.
  • Making the form before ように incorrectly. ✕ 忘れなくように ✕ 忘れないのように → ○ 忘れないように. ように attaches directly to the dictionary form or the ない-form. の is not needed, because の + ように after a noun is a different pattern meaning 'like ...'.

§4How it's different from similar grammar

〜ために (purpose: in order to)
Both show a purpose, but the verb before them is different. ために follows an action that the speaker decides to do, and both clauses have the same subject: 家を買うために、お金をためています (I am saving money in order to buy a house). ように follows a state or result that the speaker cannot simply decide: a potential form, a ない-form, or verbs like わかる and 見える: 家が買えるように、お金をためています (I am saving money so that I will be able to buy a house). When the two clauses have different subjects, ように is the normal choice: 子どもが一人で読めるように、ひらがなで書きました.
〜ようにする (try to / make sure to)
〜ように、B has a second clause B that says what you do to reach the goal: 忘れないように、カレンダーに書きました (I wrote it on the calendar so that I wouldn't forget). 〜ようにする has no separate action clause. It says that you make an effort to do, or not to do, the thing itself, often as a habit: 約束の時間を忘れないようにしています (I try not to forget appointment times).

§5How this shows up on the JLPT

The classic N4 grammar-form question asks you to choose between ように and ために. Look at the verb just before the blank: potential form, ない-form, わかる, 見える, 聞こえる, なる → ように; dictionary form of an intentional action or noun + の → ために. Another type gives you 〜ように and asks for the verb form, so remember 'potential or ない-form'. In sentence-ordering questions, ように comes right after the verb with nothing in between. In reading passages, the clause before ように tells you the writer's goal, and the clause after it tells you what the writer actually does.

§6Quick check (3 questions)

  • 1. Choose the best form for the blank: みんなに__ように、字を大きく書いてください。

    みんなに__ように、じをおおきくかいてください。

  • 2. Choose the best phrase for the blank: 新しい車を__、お金をためています。

    あたらしいくるまを__、おかねをためています。

  • 3. Which sentence is grammatically correct?
