JLPT N4

〜といい/〜たらいい(希望)

といい/たらいい

I hope that... / it would be nice if...

← All N4 grammar pointsTiếng Việt

〜といい and 〜たらいい literally mean 'if ... happens, it will be good'. You use them to say what you hope will happen, often for things you cannot control, such as the weather, a result, or another person's health. 〜といいですね shares the hope with the listener, 〜といいなあ is what you say to yourself, and 〜といいんですが sounds a little worried. For your own action, use the potential form: 行けるといいなあ (I hope I can go).

§1Structure

〜といい: verb dictionary form / ない-form + といい (晴れるといい, 降らないといい). い-adjective plain form + といい (広いといい). な-adjective / noun + だ + といい (静かだといい, 休みだといい). 〜たらいい: verb た-form + ら + いい (見つかったらいい), い-adjective 〜かったらいい, な-adjective / noun + だったらいい. 〜ばいい (晴れればいい) can be used in the same way. When you talk about a hope, the sentence usually ends with ね, な(あ), んですが or けど: 〜といいですね / 〜といいなあ / 〜といいんですが.

§2Examples

  • あしたは晴れるといいですね。

    あしたははれるといいですね。

I hope it will be sunny tomorrow.

  • お母さんが早く元気になるといいですね。

    おかあさんがはやくげんきになるといいですね。

I hope your mother gets well soon.

  • 週末、雨が降らないといいんですが。

    しゅうまつ、あめがふらないといいんですが。

I hope it doesn't rain this weekend (but I'm a little worried).

  • ホテルの部屋が広いといいなあ。

    ホテルのへやがひろいといいなあ。

I hope the hotel room is big.

  • 新しいアパートが静かだといいんですが。

    あたらしいアパートがしずかだといいんですが。

I hope the new apartment is quiet.

  • 旅行の日はいい天気だといいね。

    りょこうのひはいいてんきだといいね。

I hope the weather is nice on the day of the trip.

  • いい仕事が見つかったらいいですね。

    いいしごとがみつかったらいいですね。

I hope you find a good job.

  • 来年、日本へ行けるといいなあ。

    らいねん、にほんへいけるといいなあ。

I hope I can go to Japan next year.

§3Common mistakes

  • Forgetting だ after a noun or な-adjective before といい. ✕ あしたは休みといいですね ✕ 部屋がきれいといいですね → ○ あしたは休みだといいですね ○ 部屋がきれいだといいですね. With たらいい, use だったら: 休みだったらいいですね.
  • Using といい with your own planned action to say 'I want to do'. ✕ わたしは来年日本へ行くといいです. For something you want to do, use 〜たい: 日本へ行きたいです. If you mean 'I hope I will be able to', use the potential form: 日本へ行けるといいなあ.
  • Ending a hope with a bare 〜といいです. When you talk about a hope, the sentence usually ends with ね, なあ, んですが or けど. △ あした晴れるといいです → ○ あした晴れるといいですね / 晴れるといいなあ.

§4How it's different from similar grammar

〜たらいいですか (asking for advice)
The form is similar, but the use is different. Question word + 〜たらいいですか asks the listener what you should do: どこで切符を買ったらいいですか (Where should I buy a ticket?). The answer 〜といいですよ / 〜たらいいですよ gives advice about the listener's action: 駅員に聞くといいですよ (You should ask the station staff). On this page, 〜といい(ですね / なあ) is about something the speaker cannot decide, so it is a hope, not advice: 切符がまだあるといいですね (I hope there are still tickets).
〜てほしい (I want someone to do...)
〜てほしい is a wish directed at a person: you want that person to do something, and it can sound like a request. 弟にもっと勉強してほしいです = I want my younger brother to study more. 〜といい is a softer hope about how things turn out, and it does not ask anyone to do anything. 弟が大学に入れるといいですね = I hope my younger brother can get into university.

§5How this shows up on the JLPT

In grammar-form questions, the blank is often the ending: after a clause about weather, results or health, choose 〜といいですね / 〜といいなあ / 〜といいんですが, not 〜たいです (your own action) or 〜てほしいです (needs a person + に). Also check the connection: noun and な-adjective need だ (休みだといい). In sentence-ordering questions, keep the chain [clause]+ と + いい + んですが together. In reading and listening, 〜といいんですが shows that the speaker hopes for something but is not sure it will happen.

§6Quick check (3 questions)

  • 1. Choose the best form for the blank: あしたのハイキング、雨が__といいですね。

    あしたのハイキング、あめが__といいですね。

  • 2. Which sentence correctly says 'I hope the test is easy'?

  • 3. Which sentence expresses the speaker's hope, not advice to the listener?
