'A と、B' means that whenever A happens, B follows naturally or automatically. It is used for nature, machines, directions, habits, and other results that are always the same. Because B is a natural result, B cannot be the speaker's will, a request, an invitation, or a wish (〜たいです, 〜てください, 〜ましょう, 〜つもりです); use 〜たら for those.

§3Common mistakes
- Putting the past form before と. The word before と stays non-past; the tense is shown only at the end of the sentence. Wrong: 夏になったと、よく泳ぎました. Right: 夏になると、よく泳ぎました.
- Ending the sentence with a request, an invitation, or a wish. After と the result must be something that happens naturally. Wrong: 駅に着くと、電話してください / 暇だと、映画を見に行きたいです. Right: 駅に着いたら、電話してください / 暇だったら、映画を見に行きたいです.
- Leaving out だ after a な-adjective or a noun. Wrong: 不便と、困ります / 雨と、行けません. Right: 不便だと、困ります / 雨だと、行けません. (Without だ, 雨と would be read as 'rain and ...'.)
§4How it's different from similar grammar
- 〜たら (if / when — one-time events, requests allowed)
- 〜と is for results that always follow: 春になると、花が咲きます (When spring comes, flowers bloom). 〜たら can be used for a single event on one occasion, and the second half can be a request, an invitation, or the speaker's will: 春になったら、花見に行きましょう (When spring comes, let's go to see the cherry blossoms). You cannot say 春になると、花見に行きましょう.
- 〜ば (if — a condition that is needed for the result)
- Both can state general rules, and sometimes both are possible: このボタンを押すと / 押せば、ドアが開きます. 〜と simply describes what always happens next. 〜ば puts the focus on the condition ('if that condition is met'), and when the ば-part is a state, the speaker's wish or will can follow: 安ければ、買いたいです. With と this is not possible: you cannot say 安いと、買いたいです.
§5How this shows up on the JLPT
The typical N4 question gives you と, たら, ば, and なら as choices. First look at the end of the sentence: if it is a request, an invitation, or a wish (〜てください, 〜ましょう, 〜たい), と is wrong. If the sentence describes a machine, the way to a place, nature, or a habit, と is the natural answer. In form questions, check that the word before と is non-past and that な-adjectives and nouns have だ (静かだと, 雨だと). In reading passages, 〜と often appears in directions and in instructions for machines.
§6Quick check (3 questions)
1. Choose the form that fits the blank: この角を右に__、コンビニが見えます。
このかどをみぎに__、コンビニがみえます。
2. Which sentence is correct?
3. Choose the best form for the blank: 日本に__、いっしょに京都へ行きませんか。
にほんに__、いっしょにきょうとへいきませんか。
