〜とき

とき

When ... / at the time of ...

← All N5 grammar pointsTiếng Việt

〜とき tells the time when the main action or state happens: A とき、B = when A, B. The tense of the whole sentence is shown only at the end of the sentence. With action verbs, the form before とき shows the order of the two actions. Dictionary form + とき means B happens before A is finished (before or during A); た-form + とき means B happens after A is finished. This difference matters most with verbs of movement such as 行く, 来る and 帰る.

§1Structure

とき is a noun, so the part before it has the same form as before any noun. Verb: plain form (dictionary form 行く / ない-form 行かない / た-form 行った) + とき. い-adjective: 〜い + とき (忙しいとき). な-adjective: 〜な + とき (ひまなとき). Noun: noun + の + とき (子どものとき). The polite ます/です form is normally not used before とき. After とき you can add は or に (〜ときは / 〜ときに), or use it alone.

§2Examples

  • 道がわからないとき、交番で聞きます。

    みちがわからないとき、こうばんでききます。

When I don't know the way, I ask at the police box.

  • 子どものとき、よく川で泳ぎました。

    こどものとき、よくかわでおよぎました。

When I was a child, I often swam in the river.

  • ひまなとき、何をしますか。

    ひまなとき、なにをしますか。

What do you do when you are free?

  • 頭が痛いとき、この薬を飲みます。

    あたまがいたいとき、このくすりをのみます。

When I have a headache, I take this medicine.

  • 国へ帰るとき、家族におみやげを買いました。

    くにへかえるとき、かぞくにおみやげをかいました。

When I was going back to my country, I bought souvenirs for my family (before I left).

  • うちへ帰ったとき、「ただいま」と言います。

    うちへかえったとき、「ただいま」といいます。

When you get home, you say "Tadaima."

  • 忙しいときは、朝ご飯を食べない。

    いそがしいときは、あさごはんをたべない。

    When I'm busy, I don't eat breakfast.

  • 学生のとき、あまり勉強しなかった。

    がくせいのとき、あまりべんきょうしなかった。

    When I was a student, I didn't study much.

§3Common mistakes

  • Forgetting な after a な-adjective or の after a noun. ✕ 大変とき ✕ 大変だとき → ○ 大変なとき. ✕ 子どもとき ✕ 子どもだとき → ○ 子どものとき. とき is a noun, so the word before it takes the same form as before any other noun. い-adjectives need nothing extra: ✕ 寒いのとき → ○ 寒いとき.
  • Using the polite form before とき. ✕ 日本へ行きますとき → ○ 日本へ行くとき. ✕ 忙しいですとき → ○ 忙しいとき. Even in a polite sentence, the part before とき is in the plain form; only the end of the sentence becomes です/ます.
  • Choosing the た-form before とき only because the whole sentence is about the past. The form before とき shows the order of the two actions, not the tense of the sentence. 日本へ行くとき、かばんを買いました means you bought the bag before you arrived in Japan. 日本へ行ったとき、かばんを買いました means you bought it after you arrived, that is, in Japan. In the same way, for a past time you can simply say 子どものとき or 忙しいとき.

§4How it's different from similar grammar

〜まえに (before) / 〜たあとで (after)
〜まえに and 〜たあとで say clearly that one action is before or after the other: 寝るまえに、歯をみがきます (I brush my teeth before I go to bed); ご飯を食べたあとで、散歩します (I take a walk after I eat). 〜とき only names the time or occasion, and the two things can be very close together: 寝るとき、「おやすみなさい」と言います (When you go to bed, you say "Oyasuminasai"). Use まえに or たあとで when the order itself is what you want to say.
〜たら (if / once ...)
〜とき simply tells when something happens: 駅に着いたとき、友だちに電話しました (When I arrived at the station, I called my friend). 〜たら (N4) sets a condition: B happens if A happens, or once A is finished. 駅に着いたら、電話してください (Once you arrive at the station, please call me). 雨が降ったら、行きません (If it rains, I won't go). For "if" about something that may or may not happen, たら is used, and とき usually does not fit.

§5How this shows up on the JLPT

In N5 grammar-form questions (choose the word for the blank), the blank is often just before とき: you choose の after a noun (子どものとき), な after a な-adjective (ひまなとき), or the plain form of a verb instead of the ます-form. Another common type makes you choose between the dictionary form and the た-form, so check whether the main action happens before or after the とき-action. In sentence-building questions (the ★ type), put the whole describing part right before とき: [noun + の / plain-form clause] + とき、[main clause]. In reading passages, 〜とき tells you when something happened, which helps with questions about the order of events.

§6Quick check (3 questions)

  • 1. Choose the word that fits the blank: 子ども__とき、この町に住んでいました。

    こども__とき、このまちにすんでいました。

  • 2. Which sentence correctly says "When it's cold, I drink hot tea"?

  • 3. 「国へ帰るとき、おみやげを買いました。」 When did the speaker buy the souvenirs?

    「くにへかえるとき、おみやげをかいました。」
