A たあとで B means 'after A, B'. A happens first and is finished, and then B happens. The た here does not mean that the whole sentence is in the past. The tense of the sentence is shown only at the end. It is the partner of 〜まえに (before).
§1Structure
Verb た-form + あとで (食べたあとで). Noun + の + あとで (授業のあとで). The verb before あとで stays in the た-form even when the sentence is about the future or a habit.

§3Common mistakes
- Using the dictionary form or the て-form before あとで. ✗ 食べるあとで、散歩します。 ✗ 食べてあとで、散歩します。 The verb before あとで is always the た-form, even for the future: ○ 食べたあとで、散歩します。 ○ 明日、仕事が終わったあとで、電話します。
- Forgetting の after a noun. ✗ 授業あとで、図書館へ行きます。 A noun needs の before あとで: ○ 授業のあとで、図書館へ行きます。
- Mixing up the order with まえに. In A たあとで B, A is the first action. If you brush your teeth and then go to bed, say ○ 歯をみがいたあとで、寝ます or ○ 寝るまえに、歯をみがきます. ✗ 寝たあとで、歯をみがきます would mean you brush your teeth after you sleep.
§4How it's different from similar grammar
- 〜てから (after doing, and then)
- Both mean 'after', and in many sentences you can use either: 手を洗ったあとで、食べます / 手を洗ってから、食べます. たあとで simply says which action is earlier and which is later. てから makes it clear that A must be done first and that B follows it. てから is also used for the starting point of something that continues: 日本へ来てから、ずっと東京に住んでいます (I have lived in Tokyo ever since I came to Japan). たあとで is usually not used in this way.
- 〜まえに (before doing)
- あとで and まえに are a pair, but the verb form is different. Before あとで, use the た-form: 食べたあとで、歯をみがきます (I brush my teeth after I eat). Before まえに, use the dictionary form: 食べるまえに、手を洗います (I wash my hands before I eat). With a noun, both take の: 食事のあとで / 食事のまえに.
§5How this shows up on the JLPT
In the grammar questions, the blank is usually the verb right before あとで, and the choices are forms of one verb (見る / 見て / 見た / 見ます). Pick the た-form even if the sentence ends in 〜ます or 〜ましょう. The の in Noun + の + あとで is also a common blank. In sentence-ordering questions, keep 'た-form + あとで' together as one block. In reading and listening, questions such as 'What will the person do first?' depend on あとで, まえに and てから, so mark the order of the actions as you read or listen.
§6Quick check (3 questions)
1. Choose the word that fits the blank: 手を__あとで、ごはんを食べます。
てを__あとで、ごはんをたべます。
2. Choose the word that fits the blank: 仕事__あとで、買い物に行きます。
しごと__あとで、かいものにいきます。
3. Which sentence has the same meaning as 朝ごはんを食べるまえに、シャワーを浴びました。?
あさごはんをたべるまえに、シャワーをあびました。
