〜くなる/〜になる

くなる/になる

To become ... / to get ...

← All N5 grammar pointsTiếng Việt

なる means 'to become'. This pattern shows that a person, a thing or a situation changes into a new state. The change happens by itself or over time, and the sentence does not say who caused it. 〜なりました says the change has already happened, and 〜なります is for a change that will come or that always comes.

§1Structure

い-adjective: change the last い to く + なる (寒い → 寒くなる). いい is irregular: よくなる. な-adjective + に + なる (元気 → 元気になる, きれい → きれいになる). Noun + に + なる (医者になる, 春になる, 6歳になる). The thing that changes is marked with が or は.

§2Examples

  • 最近、寒くなりましたね。

    さいきん、さむくなりましたね。

It has gotten cold lately, hasn't it?

  • 薬を飲んで、元気になりました。

    くすりをのんで、げんきになりました。

I took medicine and got well.

  • 弟は来年、大学生になります。

    おとうとはらいねん、だいがくせいになります。

My younger brother will become a university student next year.

  • 薬を飲みましたが、まだよくなりません。

    くすりをのみましたが、まだよくなりません。

I took medicine, but I haven't gotten better yet.

  • 部屋はきれいになりましたか。

    へやはきれいになりましたか。

    Has the room become clean?

  • もうすぐ春になります。

    もうすぐはるになります。

    It will be spring soon.

  • 暗くなったから、もう帰る。

    くらくなったから、もうかえる。

It has gotten dark, so I'm going home now. (plain style)

  • 息子は今年、6歳になった。

    むすこはことし、ろくさいになった。

My son turned six this year. (plain style)

§3Common mistakes

  • Not changing い to く. ✗ 寒いになりました。 ✗ 寒いくなりました。 For an い-adjective, take off the last い and add く: ○ 寒くなりました。 Be careful with いい: ✗ いくなりました → ○ よくなりました。
  • Treating a な-adjective that ends in い as an い-adjective. ✗ 部屋がきれくなりました。 ✗ 有名くなりました。 きれい, 有名 and きらい are な-adjectives, so they take に: ○ きれいになりました, ○ 有名になりました。
  • Dropping に, or using が / を, after a noun. ✗ 医者なります。 ✗ 医者がなります。 ✗ 医者をなります。 The result of the change is marked with に: ○ 医者になります。 English 'become a doctor' has no word like に, but Japanese always needs it.

§4How it's different from similar grammar

〜くする / 〜にする (to make something ...)
なる shows that something changes, and it does not say who changed it. The thing that changes takes が: 部屋がきれいになりました (The room became clean). する shows that someone changes something on purpose. The thing takes を: 部屋をきれいにしました (I made the room clean). The form before なる and する is the same: 〜く for い-adjectives, 〜に for な-adjectives and nouns.
〜ようになる (to come to do / become able to do)
くなる and になる are used with adjectives and nouns: 日本語が上手になりました (My Japanese became good). A verb cannot come directly before なる. To talk about a change in what you do or can do, use verb + ようになる (N4): 日本語が話せるようになりました (I became able to speak Japanese). ✗ 話せるになりました is wrong.

§5How this shows up on the JLPT

In the grammar questions, the blank is often the adjective before なります, with choices such as 高い / 高く / 高いに / 高くて. Pick 〜く for an い-adjective and 〜に for a な-adjective or a noun. きれい and 有名 are common traps because they look like い-adjectives. The particle に after a noun (先生_なりました) is also tested. In sentence-ordering questions, 〜く or 〜に comes directly before なる. In reading, 〜なりました tells you that something is different from before, which often helps you answer 'What changed?'.

§6Quick check (3 questions)

  • 1. Choose the word that fits the blank: このごろ、野菜が__なりました。

    このごろ、やさいが__なりました。

  • 2. Which sentence correctly says 'The classroom became quiet'?

  • 3. Which word takes に (not く) before なります?
