An adjective describes a noun, but with 〜く or 〜に it can describe a verb. It tells you how an action is done, like 'early', 'neatly' or 'quietly' in English. The 〜く / 〜に word usually comes before the verb, and other words such as the object can come between them. よく, from いい, means 'well', and it can also mean 'often'.
§1Structure
い-adjective: change the last い to く + verb (早い → 早く起きる, 大きい → 大きく書く). いい is irregular: よく (よく聞く). な-adjective + に + verb (きれい → きれいに書く, 静か → 静かに歩く, 上手 → 上手に話す).

§3Common mistakes
- Putting the adjective before the verb without changing it. ✗ 今朝は早い起きました。 ✗ 字をきれい書きます。 Before a verb, an い-adjective changes い to く, and a な-adjective takes に: ○ 早く起きました, ○ きれいに書きます。 English 'early' and 'fast' do not change their form either, so English speakers often forget this change, too.
- Using な or で before a verb. ✗ 静かな歩いてください。 ✗ 静かで歩いてください。 な is only used before a noun (静かな部屋). Before a verb, use に: ○ 静かに歩いてください。
- Using the い-adjective rule for きれい or for いい. ✗ きれく書きます → ○ きれいに書きます (きれい is a な-adjective). ✗ いく聞いてください → ○ よく聞いてください (いい becomes よく).
§4How it's different from similar grammar
- Adjective + noun (早い電車, 静かな部屋)
- The form of an adjective depends on the word that it describes. Before a noun, an い-adjective keeps い and a な-adjective takes な: 早い電車に乗ります (I take an early train), 静かな部屋で勉強します (I study in a quiet room). Before a verb, use く and に: 早く起きます (I get up early), 静かに勉強します (I study quietly).
- 〜くなる / 〜になる (to become ...)
- The 〜く / 〜に form is the same, but the meaning is different. With an action verb, it tells how the action is done: 字を大きく書きました (I wrote the letters large). With なる, it tells the new state after a change: 子どもが大きくなりました (The child has grown big). With する, it tells the state that someone makes: 字を大きくしました (I made the letters larger).
§5How this shows up on the JLPT
This is a very common N5 grammar question. The blank comes before a verb, and the choices are forms of one adjective, such as 早い / 早く / 早いに / 早くて, or 静か / 静かな / 静かに / 静かで. First check the word after the blank. If it is a verb, pick 〜く or 〜に. If it is a noun, pick 〜い or 〜な. Remember that きれい is a な-adjective. In sentence-ordering questions, the 〜く / 〜に word goes before the verb, often with the object between them, as in 名前を 大きく 書いて ください.
§6Quick check (3 questions)
1. Choose the word that fits the blank: 明日は試験ですから、今晩は__寝ます。
あしたはしけんですから、こんばんは__ねます。
2. Which sentence is correct?
3. Choose the adverb form of いい that fits the blank: 先生の話を__聞いてください。
せんせいのはなしを__きいてください。
