JLPT N5

〜くする/〜にする(変化させる)

くする/にする

To make something ... (change it on purpose)

← All N5 grammar pointsTiếng Việt

This pattern shows that someone changes a thing into a new state on purpose. The thing that is changed is marked with を. It is the partner of 〜くなる / 〜になる, where the thing changes and nobody is named as the cause. It is often used in requests, such as 小さくしてください and きれいにしてください. 静かにする is a set phrase that means 'to be quiet'.

§1Structure

Thing + を + い-adjective with the last い changed to く + する (音を小さくする). いい is irregular: よくする. Thing + を + な-adjective + に + する (部屋をきれいにする). Thing + を + noun + に + する (りんごをジャムにする).

§2Examples

  • テレビの音を小さくしてください。

    テレビのおとをちいさくしてください。

Please turn the TV down. (lit. make the TV sound small)

  • 昨日、部屋をきれいにしました。

    きのう、へやをきれいにしました。

I cleaned up my room yesterday. (lit. made the room clean)

    あついですから、かみをみじかくしました。

It's hot, so I had my hair cut short.

  • 図書館では静かにしてください。

Please be quiet in the library.

    りんごをジャムにしました。

  • 明日はお客さんが来るから、うちをきれいにする。

    あしたはおきゃくさんがくるから、うちをきれいにする。

Guests are coming tomorrow, so I'm going to clean the house. (plain style)

§3Common mistakes

  • Using the wrong form before する. ✗ 音を小さいにしてください。 ✗ 音を小さいくしてください。 For an い-adjective, change い to く: ○ 音を小さくしてください。 For a な-adjective, use に, not く: ✗ 部屋をきれくします → ○ 部屋をきれいにします。 For いい, say よくする, not ✗ いくする.
  • Mixing する and なる. ✗ 部屋をきれいになりました。 When you say who changes the thing and mark the thing with を, use する: ○ (わたしは) 部屋をきれいにしました。 When you only say that the thing changed, use が + なる: ○ 部屋がきれいになりました。
  • Translating 'make' with 作る. ✗ 部屋を明るく作ります。 作る means to produce a new thing, such as a cake or a chair. To change the state of a thing, use する: ○ 部屋を明るくします。

§4How it's different from similar grammar

〜くなる / 〜になる (to become ...)
する is used when someone changes a thing on purpose, and the thing takes を: 先生は問題を簡単にしました (The teacher made the questions easy). なる is used when the thing changes, and nobody is named as the cause. The thing takes が: 問題が簡単になりました (The questions became easy). The form before する and なる is the same: 〜く for い-adjectives, 〜に for な-adjectives and nouns.
〜にする (to decide on / choose)
Noun + にする has two different uses. With a thing marked by を, it means to change that thing into something else: りんごをジャムにします (I make the apples into jam). Without such an object, it usually means to choose something, for example when you order in a restaurant: わたしはコーヒーにします (I'll have coffee). This second use is an N4 point.

§5How this shows up on the JLPT

In the grammar questions, the blank is often the adjective before します or してください, with choices such as 短い / 短く / 短いに / 短くて. Pick 〜く for an い-adjective and 〜に for a な-adjective. Another common question gives you を or が and asks you to choose between します and なります: を goes with する, が goes with なる. In listening, requests like もう少し大きくしてください and 静かにしてください are common in the task questions, so make sure you understand what the speaker wants changed.

§6Quick check (3 questions)

  • 1. Choose the word that fits the blank: すみません、ラジオの音を__してください。

    すみません、ラジオのおとを__してください。

  • 2. Choose the word that fits the blank: 掃除をして、部屋をきれいに__。

    そうじをして、へやをきれいに__。

  • 3. In which sentence does にします mean 'choose / decide on', not 'change something'?
