JLPT N4

〜にする(決定)

にする

decide on / I'll have ...

← All N4 grammar pointsTiếng Việt

Shows that you choose one thing from several possibilities. It is very common when ordering in a restaurant, when shopping, and when fixing a date, a place or a present. 〜にします is used at the moment you decide, and 〜にしました reports a choice already made.

§1Structure

Noun + にする. Question words also come before にする: 何にしますか, どれにしますか, いつにしますか. A verb cannot come directly before にする; use verb dictionary form + ことにする.

§2Examples

  • わたしはコーヒーにします。

    わたしはコーヒーにします。

    I'll have coffee.

  • 「飲み物は何にしますか。」「紅茶にします。」

    「のみものはなににしますか。」「こうちゃにします。」

"What will you have to drink?" "I'll have black tea."

  • 会議は来週の月曜日にしましょう。

    かいぎはらいしゅうのげつようびにしましょう。

Let's make the meeting next Monday.

  • このかばんは高いので、あちらの安いのにします。

    このかばんはたかいので、あちらのやすいのにします。

This bag is expensive, so I'll take the cheap one over there.

  • パーティーは土曜日にしませんか。

    パーティーはどようびにしませんか。

Why don't we have the party on Saturday?

  • 今年の旅行は北海道にしました。

    ことしのりょこうはほっかいどうにしました。

For this year's trip, we decided on Hokkaido.

  • 母の誕生日のプレゼントはどれにする?

    ははのたんじょうびのプレゼントはどれにする?

Which one shall we choose for Mom's birthday present?

  • 今日は寒いから、冷たい飲み物はやめて、お茶にした。

    きょうはさむいから、つめたいのみものはやめて、おちゃにした。

It's cold today, so I gave up on a cold drink and chose tea.

§3Common mistakes

  • Using を instead of に when you mean 'I'll have coffee': コーヒーをします is wrong. The thing you choose takes に: コーヒーにします.
  • Putting a verb directly before にする: バスで行くにします is wrong. To decide on an action, use ことにする: バスで行くことにします.
  • Mixing it up with the N5 pattern 〜を〜にする (change something). 部屋をきれいにします means 'I will make the room clean', not 'I choose the clean room'. In the 'choose' meaning there is usually a topic with は and no change happens: 部屋は広いのにします (As for the room, I'll take the large one).

§4How it's different from similar grammar

〜ことにする (decide to do)
Noun + にする chooses a thing, a time or a place: 昼ご飯はカレーにします (I'll have curry for lunch). Verb + ことにする decides an action: 昼ご飯は家で食べることにします (I've decided to eat lunch at home). A verb always needs こと before にする.
〜をください (please give me)
〜をください asks the other person to give you something: コーヒーをください (Coffee, please). 〜にします only states your choice, so you can also say it to a friend who is not serving you: わたしはコーヒーにします (I'll go with coffee). In a restaurant both are used when ordering.

§5How this shows up on the JLPT

In N4 grammar-form questions, this pattern is usually a particle question: 「飲み物は何__しますか」 → に. In listening, it is the key to task questions in shops and restaurants: the item followed by 〜にします is the final choice, even if other items were discussed first (じゃ、やっぱりこれにします). Also watch for 〜にしましょう and 〜にしませんか when people fix a day or a place.

§6Quick check (3 questions)

  • 1. Choose the particle that fits the blank: 「何を飲みますか。」「わたしはジュース__します。」

    「なにをのみますか。」「わたしはジュース__します。」

  • 2. Which sentence correctly says 'I decided to go by bus'?

  • 3. In which sentence does にする mean 'choose / decide on'?
