〜をください is used to ask someone to give you a thing. It is the basic way to order in a restaurant and to buy things in a shop or at a ticket window. It is polite enough for shops and restaurants. It can also be used for things you cannot touch, such as time (時間をください).
§1Structure
Noun + を + ください. With a number: noun + を + number and counter + ください (りんごを3つください). The number comes after を and takes no particle. Two or more things are joined with と: AとBをください. In casual speech を is often dropped: これ、ください.
§2Examples
すみません、水をください。
すみません、みずをください。
Excuse me, could I have some water, please?
りんごを3つください。
りんごをみっつください。
Three apples, please.
コーヒーとサンドイッチをください。
コーヒーとサンドイッチをください。
A coffee and a sandwich, please.
80円の切手を5枚ください。
はちじゅうえんのきってをごまいください。
Five 80-yen stamps, please.
「これはいくらですか。」「500円です。」「じゃ、これをください。」
「これはいくらですか。」「ごひゃくえんです。」「じゃ、これをください。」
"How much is this?" "It's 500 yen." "Then I'll take this, please."
もう少し時間をください。
もうすこしじかんをください。
Please give me a little more time.
店の人に「水をください」と言いました。
みせのひとに「みずをください」といいました。
I said to the shop staff, "Water, please."
すみません、これ、ください。
すみません、これ、ください。
Excuse me, I'll take this. (spoken; を is dropped)
§3Common mistakes
- Putting a particle after the number. ✗ りんごを3つをください / ✗ りんごが3つください → ✓ りんごを3つください. を comes after the thing, and the number comes right before ください with no particle.
- Using をください with a verb to ask someone to do something. ✗ 待つをください / ✗ 見せるをください → ✓ 待ってください / ✓ 見せてください. をください is only for things (nouns). To ask for an action, use the て-form + ください.
- Using が instead of を. ✗ 水がください → ✓ 水をください. The thing you ask for is the object of ください, so it takes を (を may be dropped in casual speech, but it is not replaced by が).
§4How it's different from similar grammar
- 〜てください (please do ...)
- Noun + をください asks for a thing: そのかばんをください (I'll take that bag, please). Verb て-form + ください asks someone to do an action: そのかばんを見せてください (Please show me that bag). In the second sentence, を belongs to the verb 見せます, not to ください.
- 〜がほしい (I want ...)
- 〜がほしいです only says what you want; it does not ask anyone for it: 新しいかばんがほしいです (I want a new bag). 〜をください is a request to the person in front of you: このかばんをください (I'll take this bag, please). When you order or buy something, use をください, not がほしいです. Also note the particles: が with ほしい, を with ください.
§5How this shows up on the JLPT
In N5 grammar Part 1, the blank is often the particle before ください: choose を for a thing (水__ください). If a number follows the thing, を still comes after the thing, not after the number. In Part 2 (sentence building with ★), the usual order is thing + を + number + ください, for example この + りんごを + 3つ + ください. In listening (shopping and restaurant scenes), listen for the number before ください to find what and how many the person buys.
§6Quick check (3 questions)
1. Choose the particle that fits the blank: すみません、この赤いペン__ください。
すみません、このあかいペン__ください。
2. Which sentence correctly says 'Two hamburgers, please'?
3. At a hotel, you want the staff to call a taxi for you. Which sentence is correct?
