These words point at things without saying their names. Which one you use depends on where the thing is: near you (これ), near the person you are talking to (それ), or far from both of you (あれ). Because of this, the word often changes between a question and its answer: a thing that is それ for you is これ for the person holding it. In conversation, それ can also point to what the other person has just said (それはいいですね).
§1Structure
これ / それ / あれ are used alone, like nouns, and take particles: これは〜です, それをください, あれが〜です, これも〜です. これ = a thing near the speaker. それ = a thing near the listener. あれ = a thing far from both. No noun comes right after them (for 'this book', use この本). The question word is どれ (which one).

§3Common mistakes
- Putting a noun right after これ / それ / あれ. ✗ これ本はおもしろいです / ✗ これの本はおもしろいです → ✓ この本はおもしろいです. Before a noun, use この / その / あの. これ / それ / あれ are used alone.
- Repeating the same word in the answer. Your friend points at the watch on your arm and asks 「それは何ですか。」 ✗「それは時計です。」 → ✓「これは時計です。」 The watch is near you, so for you it is これ.
- Pointing at a person in front of you with これ / それ / あれ. あれは田中さんです sounds rude. Say あの人は田中さんです, or more politely あの方は田中さんです. When you introduce someone, use こちら: こちらは田中さんです. (Pointing at a photo is fine: これは母です.)
§4How it's different from similar grammar
- この / その / あの + noun
- これ / それ / あれ stand alone: これはわたしのかさです (This is my umbrella). この / その / あの must be followed by a noun: このかさはわたしのです (This umbrella is mine). ✗ このはわたしのかさです is wrong, because この cannot stand alone.
- ここ / そこ / あそこ (places)
- これ / それ / あれ point at things: これは教室のかぎです (This is the classroom key). ここ / そこ / あそこ point at places: ここは教室です (This place is a classroom). To ask about a thing use どれ or 何; to ask about a place use どこ.
§5How this shows up on the JLPT
N5 grammar Part 1 often gives a short dialogue and asks you to choose これ / それ / あれ (or この / その / あの). First check whether a noun comes right after the blank: if yes, the answer is a この-type word; if a particle such as は or を comes next, it is a これ-type word. Then think about who is near the thing. If the question uses それ, the answer often uses これ. In listening questions with pictures, あれ is for a thing far from both speakers.
§6Quick check (3 questions)
1. You are holding a book. Your friend, sitting across the table, asks: それは何ですか。 Choose the word for your answer: __は日本語の本です。
それはなんですか。 __はにほんごのほんです。
2. Which sentence is correct?
3. When do you use それ to point at a thing?
