ここ・そこ・あそこ/こちら・そちら・あちら

ここ・そこ・あそこ/こちら・そちら・あちら

Here / there / over there (places and directions)

← All N5 grammar pointsTiếng Việt

ここ, そこ and あそこ point at places, in the same way that これ, それ and あれ point at things. Note that the far form is あそこ, not あこ. こちら, そちら and あちら first mean a direction, but shop staff and office workers also use them as polite words for 'here', 'there' and 'over there'. On the phone, そちら often means 'the place where you are'.

§1Structure

ここ / そこ / あそこ are nouns for places and take particles: ここは〜です, 〜はあそこです, そこに〜があります, ここで〜ます, あそこの+noun. ここ = the place where the speaker is, そこ = the place where the listener is, あそこ = a place far from both. こちら / そちら / あちら show a direction ('this way') and are also the polite forms of ここ / そこ / あそこ. こちら is also used to introduce a person politely (こちらは田中さんです). The question words are どこ and, more politely, どちら.

§2Examples

  • ここは教室です。

    ここはきょうしつです。

    This (place) is a classroom.

  • 「すみません、トイレはどこですか。」「あそこです。」

    「すみません、トイレはどこですか。」「あそこです。」

"Excuse me, where is the restroom?" "It's over there."

  • ここは入口じゃありません。入口はあちらです。

    ここはいりぐちじゃありません。いりぐちはあちらです。

This is not the entrance. The entrance is over that way.

  • そこにわたしのかばんがあります。

    そこにわたしのかばんがあります。

My bag is there (near you).

  • きのう、あそこのレストランで昼ごはんを食べました。

    きのう、あそこのレストランでひるごはんをたべました。

Yesterday I had lunch at the restaurant over there.

  • こちらへどうぞ。

    こちらへどうぞ。

    This way, please.

  • もしもし、そちらは寒いですか。

    もしもし、そちらはさむいですか。

Hello? Is it cold where you are?

  • かぎはそこにあるよ。

    かぎはそこにあるよ。

The key is right there. (casual)

§3Common mistakes

  • Saying あこ for 'over there'. ✗ トイレはあこです → ✓ トイレはあそこです. The set is ここ / そこ / あそこ: only the far form has an extra そ.
  • Mixing up ここ (a place) and これ (a thing). ✗ ここはわたしのかばんです → ✓ これはわたしのかばんです. For a place, use ここ: ここは図書館です (This place is a library).
  • Using に for the place of an action. ✗ ここに昼ごはんを食べます → ✓ ここで昼ごはんを食べます. The place where you do something takes で. に is used with あります / います to say where something is: ここに電話があります.

§4How it's different from similar grammar

これ / それ / あれ (things)
これ / それ / あれ point at things: あれは銀行です (That building over there is a bank). ここ / そこ / あそこ point at places: 銀行はあそこです (The bank is over there). The first sentence tells what the thing is; the second tells where it is, so it answers どこですか.
ここ vs. こちら
ここ is the everyday word: 受付はここです (The reception desk is here). こちら is more polite and is common in shops, hotels and offices: 受付はこちらです. こちら can also show a direction (こちらへどうぞ, This way, please). In the same way, どちら is the polite form of どこ: お国はどちらですか (Which country are you from?).

§5How this shows up on the JLPT

In N5 grammar Part 1, a common pattern is a question with どこ and an answer with a place word: 「トイレはどこですか。」「あそこです。」 If the blank is followed by a particle such as に, で or は and the sentence is about a place, choose a ここ-type word, not これ or この. In listening, shop staff and station staff say こちら / あちら instead of ここ / あそこ, so be ready to hear these polite forms. お国はどちらですか asks about your country, not about a direction.

§6Quick check (3 questions)

  • 1. Choose the word that fits the blank: わたしのかばんは__にあります。

    わたしのかばんは__にあります。

  • 2. Which sentence is correct?

  • 3. At a restaurant, a staff member says to you: こちらへどうぞ。 What does it mean?
