JLPT N5

この・その・あの+名詞

この・その・あの

This / that / that ... over there + noun

← All N5 grammar pointsTiếng Việt

この, その and あの come before a noun and show which one you mean: 'this book', 'that book (near you)', 'that book over there'. The rule for near and far is the same as for これ / それ / あれ. In Vietnamese the word 'này / đó / kia' comes after the noun, but in Japanese この / その / あの always come before it.

§1Structure

この / その / あの + noun (この本, その人, あの店). They always need a noun after them and cannot stand alone. No の is added. An adjective can come between them and the noun: この白いシャツ. この = near the speaker, その = near the listener, あの = far from both. For people, この人 / その人 / あの人 is normal, and あの方 is more polite. The question word is どの + noun.

§2Examples

  • この本はおもしろいです。

    このほんはおもしろいです。

    This book is interesting.

  • そのかばんはいくらですか。

    そのかばんはいくらですか。

How much is that bag (near you)?

  • あの人は田中さんです。

    あのひとはたなかさんです。

That person over there is Mr. Tanaka.

  • このバスは空港へ行きません。

    このバスはくうこうへいきません。

This bus does not go to the airport.

  • きのう、あの店でパンを買いました。

    きのう、あのみせでパンをかいました。

Yesterday I bought bread at that shop over there.

  • すみません、その白いシャツをください。

    すみません、そのしろいシャツをください。

  • あの方はどなたですか。

    あのかたはどなたですか。

Who is that person over there? (polite)

  • このケーキ、おいしいね。

    このケーキ、おいしいね。

This cake is good, isn't it? (casual)

§3Common mistakes

  • Using この / その / あの without a noun. ✗ このはわたしのかさです → ✓ これはわたしのかさです or ✓ このかさはわたしのです. この needs a noun after it. When there is no noun, use これ / それ / あれ.
  • Adding の, or using これ before a noun. ✗ このの本 / ✗ これの本 / ✗ これ本 → ✓ この本. この goes directly before the noun.
  • Following the Vietnamese word order. ✗ 本このはおもしろいです (from 'quyển sách này') → ✓ この本はおもしろいです. In Japanese, この / その / あの come before the noun, never after it.

§4How it's different from similar grammar

これ / それ / あれ
これ / それ / あれ are used alone: それはいくらですか (How much is that?). この / その / あの are used with a noun: そのかばんはいくらですか (How much is that bag?). Use the この-type when you want to say the name of the thing, or when you talk about a person (あの人).
どの + noun (which ...?)
どの is the question word of this group. Like この, it needs a noun: どのかさがリンさんのですか (Which umbrella is Linh's?) — この赤いかさです (It's this red umbrella). A question word that is the subject takes が, not は: ✗ どのかさは.

§5How this shows up on the JLPT

In N5 grammar Part 1, the choices are often これ / この / ここ / こちら. Look at what comes right after the blank. If it is a noun (__かばん), choose この / その / あの. If it is a particle (__は), choose これ / それ / あれ or ここ / そこ / あそこ. In Part 2 (sentence building with ★), remember that この and its noun stay together, and that an adjective can go between them (この + 白い + シャツ).

§6Quick check (3 questions)

  • 1. Choose the word that fits the blank: __かばんはリンさんのかばんです。

    __かばんはリンさんのかばんです。

  • 2. Which sentence is correct?

  • 3. You and your friend are standing together. Far away, near the station, you can see a man. You ask your friend about him: __人はだれですか。

    __ひとはだれですか。
