〜を(対象)

を: direct object marker

← All N5 grammar pointsTiếng Việt

を marks the direct object: the thing that the action is done to. In パンを食べます, パン is what you eat. Japanese word order is object + を + verb, so the verb comes last.

§1Structure

Noun + を + verb that acts on something (食べます, 飲みます, 見ます, 読みます, 書きます, 買います, します and so on). The question is 何を + verb. The particle is written を and pronounced 'o'; this letter is used only for the particle. Many 'noun + します' verbs have two forms: 勉強します / 勉強をします.

§2Examples

  • 毎朝、コーヒーを飲みます。

    まいあさ、コーヒーをのみます。

    I drink coffee every morning.

  • きのう、新しいかばんを買いました。

    きのう、あたらしいかばんをかいました。

I bought a new bag yesterday.

  • 週末は何をしますか。

    しゅうまつはなにをしますか。

What are you going to do on the weekend?

  • わたしはたばこを吸いません。

    わたしはたばこをすいません。

    I don't smoke.

  • リンさんは図書館で日本語を勉強します。

    リンさんはとしょかんでにほんごをべんきょうします。

Ms. Linh studies Japanese at the library.

  • けさは朝ごはんを食べませんでした。

    けさはあさごはんをたべませんでした。

I didn't eat breakfast this morning.

  • きのうの晩、家族に手紙を書きました。

    きのうのばん、かぞくにてがみをかきました。

Last night I wrote a letter to my family.

  • 毎晩、テレビを見る。

    まいばん、テレビをみる。

I watch TV every night. (plain style)

§3Common mistakes

  • Using を with 好きです, 上手です, わかります, あります and ほしいです because English has an object there ('I like music'): 音楽を好きです and 日本語をわかります are wrong. These words take が: 音楽が好きです, 日本語がわかります.
  • Using を with 会います and 乗ります because 'meet a friend' and 'take a bus' have objects in English: 友だちを会います and バスを乗ります are wrong. These verbs take に: 友だちに会います, バスに乗ります.
  • Using を twice with a します verb: 日本語を勉強をします is wrong. Say 日本語を勉強します, or 日本語の勉強をします with の.

§4How it's different from similar grammar

〜が with 好き, 上手, わかる, ある
を is used with verbs of action: 魚を食べます (I eat fish), 漢字を書きます (I write kanji). Words that show a feeling, an ability or a state, not an action, mark the thing with が: 魚が好きです (I like fish), 漢字がわかります (I understand kanji), 車があります (I have a car).
〜を (place you pass through or leave)
In 本を読みます, を marks the thing the action is done to. With verbs of movement, を can also follow a place: 公園を散歩します (I walk through the park), 8時にうちを出ます (I leave home at 8). There the place is not an object; it is the place you move through or leave.

§5How this shows up on the JLPT

N5 particle questions often ask you to choose between を and が. Look at the word at the end: an action verb such as 買います or 読みます takes を, but 好きです, 上手です, わかります, あります and ほしいです take が. 会います and 乗ります with に are also common traps. In sentence-ordering questions, 'noun + を' comes directly before the verb in most cases, so join them first.

§6Quick check (3 questions)

  • 1. Choose the particle that fits the blank: 毎晩、うちで日本語の本__読みます。

    まいばん、うちでにほんごのほん__よみます。

  • 2. Which sentence is correct?

  • 3. In which sentence is を the right particle for the blank?
