を does not only mark the object of an action. With verbs of movement, it marks the place you move through or along, such as a park, a road, a bridge or the sky. With 出る and 降りる, it marks the place or vehicle you leave. In both uses the noun before を is a place, not a thing that receives the action.
§1Structure
(1) Path: place noun + を + verb of movement (歩く, 散歩する, 走る, 渡る, 曲がる, 飛ぶ). (2) Point of departure: place or vehicle noun + を + 出る / 降りる (うちを出る, 電車を降りる, 大学を出る).

§3Common mistakes
- Using で or に for the place you cross or move through: 橋で渡ります and 道に渡ります are wrong. With 渡る, the place you cross takes を: 橋を渡ります, 道を渡ります. In the same way, say 空を飛びます, not 空で飛びます.
- Mixing up the particles of 乗る and 降りる. You get ON with に and get OFF with を: 電車に乗ります, 電車を降ります. 電車に降ります is wrong.
- Mixing up the particles of 入る and 出る. You go INTO a place with に and go OUT OF it with を: 部屋に入ります, 部屋を出ます. 部屋を入ります is wrong.
§4How it's different from similar grammar
- で (place where an action happens)
- で marks the place where an activity happens: 公園で昼ごはんを食べます (I eat lunch in the park), 公園で遊びます (I play in the park). を marks the place you move through or across: 公園を歩きます (I walk through the park), 道を渡ります (I cross the road). With 散歩する you may hear both 公園を散歩します and 公園で散歩します; を gives the feeling of moving around through the park, and it is the form that most textbooks teach.
- から (starting point)
- から marks where a movement starts and is often used together with まで: うちから駅まで歩きます (I walk from home to the station). を with 出る or 降りる simply says that you leave a place or vehicle: 8時にうちを出ます (I leave home at eight), バスを降ります (I get off the bus). When 出る means 'to graduate', use を: 大学を出ました.
§5How this shows up on the JLPT
This is a classic N5 particle question. In 'choose the right form' questions, the blank comes before 渡ります, 散歩します, 曲がります, 出ます or 降ります, and the wrong choices are で, に and へ. A common trap is a pair such as 電車に乗って、東京駅で電車を降ります, where the two verbs need different particles. Learn the pairs together: 〜に乗る / 〜を降りる, 〜に入る / 〜を出る. In listening, directions like この道をまっすぐ行って、二つ目の角を右に曲がってください often appear in questions with a map.
§6Quick check (3 questions)
1. Choose the particle that fits the blank: あの橋__渡ってください。
あのはし__わたってください。
2. Choose the pair of particles that fits the two blanks, in order: 毎朝8時に電車__乗って、東京駅で電車__降ります。
まいあさはちじにでんしゃ__のって、とうきょうえきででんしゃ__おります。
3. In 公園を散歩します, を marks a place you move through. Which sentence uses を in the same way?
こうえんをさんぽします
