JLPT N5

〜から〜まで

から・まで

from ... to / until ...

← All N5 grammar pointsTiếng Việt

から marks the starting point and まで marks the end point. They are used for time (from 9 o'clock until 5 o'clock) and for place (from home to the station). You do not have to use both: use only から when you talk about the start, and only まで when you talk about the end.

§1Structure

Noun (time or place) + から + noun (time or place) + まで. The particles come after the noun: 9時から, 駅まで. から and まで can each be used alone: 9時からです, 駅まで歩きます. They can come before a verb (9時から5時まで働きます) or directly before です (9時から5時までです).

§2Examples

  • 銀行は9時から3時までです。

    ぎんこうはくじからさんじまでです。

The bank is open from 9 to 3.

  • わたしは月曜日から金曜日まで働きます。

    わたしはげつようびからきんようびまではたらきます。

I work from Monday to Friday.

  • うちから学校までバスで行きます。

    うちからがっこうまでバスでいきます。

I go from my home to school by bus.

  • 昼休みは何時から何時までですか。

    ひるやすみはなんじからなんじまでですか。

From what time until what time is the lunch break?

  • きのうは夜11時まで勉強しました。

    きのうはよるじゅういちじまでべんきょうしました。

Yesterday I studied until 11 at night.

  • 夏休みはあしたからです。

    なつやすみはあしたからです。

    The summer vacation starts tomorrow.

  • このバスは空港まで行きません。

    このバスはくうこうまでいきません。

This bus doesn't go as far as the airport.

  • 来週の月曜日から水曜日まで休む。

    らいしゅうのげつようびからすいようびまでやすむ。

I'm taking time off from Monday to Wednesday next week. (plain style)

§3Common mistakes

  • Putting the particles before the noun, as in English 'from 9' or Vietnamese 'từ 9 giờ': から9時まで5時働きます is wrong. In Japanese the particle comes after the noun: 9時から5時まで働きます.
  • Mixing に with から and まで: 9時に5時まで働きます and 9時から5時に働きます are wrong. に marks one point in time (9時に始まります); for a start and an end use から and まで: 9時から5時まで働きます.
  • Using まで for an action that happens only once, at one moment: 5時まで帰ります is wrong. まで goes with something that continues, like 5時まで働きます (I work until 5). For 'I'll go home at 5', say 5時に帰ります. 'By 5' is 5時までに, which you learn at N4.

§4How it's different from similar grammar

〜から (reason: because)
After a noun of time or place, から means 'from': 会議は3時からです (The meeting is from 3), ベトナムから来ました (I came from Vietnam). After a sentence, から means 'because': あしたはテストですから、今晩勉強します (I have a test tomorrow, so I'll study tonight). Look at what comes before から: a noun alone means 'from'; です, ます or a plain form means 'because'.
〜に (point in time)
に marks the one moment when something happens: 7時に起きます (I get up at 7). から and まで mark the two ends of something that continues: 7時から8時まで走ります (I run from 7 to 8). With まで the action continues up to that time: 12時まで寝ました means 'I slept until 12', but 12時に寝ました means 'I went to bed at 12'.

§5How this shows up on the JLPT

In N5 particle questions, から and まで often appear as a pair: if you see まで later in the sentence, the blank before it is probably から, and the other way round. Opening hours (〜は〜時から〜時までです) and travel (〜から〜まで電車で〜分) are the most common patterns. In reading and listening, check whether から follows a noun (from) or a sentence (because), because both appear at N5.

§6Quick check (3 questions)

  • 1. Choose the particle that fits the blank: 昼休みは12時から1時__です。

    ひるやすみはじゅうにじからいちじ__です。

  • 2. Which sentence correctly says 'I work from Monday to Friday'?

  • 3. In which sentence does から mean 'from' (a starting point), not 'because'?
