〜に(時間)

に: at / on / in (a point in time)

← All N5 grammar pointsTiếng Việt

に after a time word shows the point in time when an action happens, like 'at', 'on' or 'in' in English. It is needed after clock times, dates, months and years. Words like 今日, あした and 毎日 already work as adverbs, so they take no particle.

§1Structure

Time noun + に + verb. Use に with times that have a number or a fixed name: 7時に, 5日に, 3月に, 2020年に, 誕生日に, 夏休みに. Do not use に with words whose meaning depends on 'now', such as 今, 今日, あした, きのう, 今週, 来月, 去年, 毎日, 毎朝, or with いつ. With days of the week に is optional: 日曜日(に). 朝, 昼 and 夜 are usually used without に.

§2Examples

  • わたしは毎朝6時に起きます。

    わたしはまいあさろくじにおきます。

I get up at 6 every morning.

  • 7月に国へ帰ります。

    しちがつにくにへかえります。

I'm going back to my country in July.

  • 日曜日に友だちとテニスをします。

    にちようびにともだちとテニスをします。

I play tennis with a friend on Sunday.

  • 毎晩、何時に寝ますか。

    まいばん、なんじにねますか。

What time do you go to bed every night?

  • バスは8時に来ませんでした。

    バスははちじにきませんでした。

The bus didn't come at 8.

  • 授業は9時に始まります。

    じゅぎょうはくじにはじまります。

    Class starts at 9.

  • 誕生日に友だちとレストランへ行きました。

    たんじょうびにともだちとレストランへいきました。

On my birthday I went to a restaurant with friends.

  • あしたは5時に起きる。

    あしたはごじにおきる。

I'm getting up at 5 tomorrow. (plain style; あした has no に, 5時 has に)

§3Common mistakes

  • Adding に to words like あした, きのう, 毎日 and 来週 because English uses 'on / in' or Vietnamese uses 'vào': あしたに行きます and 来週に帰ります are wrong. Say あした行きます and 来週帰ります.
  • Adding に to いつ when asking when someone does something: いつに日本へ来ましたか is wrong; say いつ日本へ来ましたか. Question words with a number or a name do take に: 何時に, 何日に, 何月に, 何曜日に.
  • Using に with a length of time. に marks a point in time, not how long: 3時間に勉強しました is wrong. Say 3時間勉強しました (I studied for three hours).

§4How it's different from similar grammar

〜から〜まで (from ... until ...)
に marks one point in time: 7時に起きます (I get up at 7). から and まで mark the start and the end of something that continues: 9時から5時まで働きます (I work from 9 to 5). You cannot mix them: 9時に5時まで働きます is wrong.
〜ごろ (around)
7時に起きます means 'at 7'. 7時ごろ起きます means 'at around 7'. After ごろ, に can be added or left out: 7時ごろ(に)起きます. Both are correct.

§5How this shows up on the JLPT

N5 grammar questions where you choose a particle for a blank often test this に: for example 毎朝7時( )起きます, with に, で, を and へ as choices. A common trap is a blank after あした, 毎日 or 来週, where no particle is needed. In sentence-ordering questions, keep the time and に together as one block (7時に) and put it before the verb.

§6Quick check (3 questions)

  • 1. Choose the particle that fits the blank: わたしは毎晩11時__寝ます。

    わたしはまいばんじゅういちじ__ねます。

  • 2. Choose the word that fits the blank: 銀行は9時__3時までです。

    ぎんこうはくじ__さんじまでです。

  • 3. What goes in the blank? きのう__友だちと映画を見ました。

    きのう__ともだちとえいがをみました。
