JLPT N5

期間+に+〜回

に〜かい

... times per (period)

← All N5 grammar pointsTiếng Việt

This pattern tells how often something happens in a fixed period: 1週間に3回 means 'three times a week'. The particle に marks the period that the count is measured in. To ask about frequency, use 何回: 1か月に何回〜か. Short forms such as 週に1回 and 月に2回 are also very common.

§1Structure

Period (1日, 1週間, 1か月, 1年; also 週, 月, 年) + に + number + 回. Other counters can take the place of 回: 1日に8時間, 1週間に2日. The period always comes first.

§2Examples

  • わたしは1週間に3回、日本語の学校へ行きます。

    わたしはいっしゅうかんにさんかい、にほんごのがっこうへいきます。

I go to Japanese school three times a week.

  • この薬は1日に2回飲みます。

    このくすりはいちにちににかいのみます。

I take this medicine twice a day.

  • 1か月に何回映画を見ますか。

    いっかげつになんかいえいがをみますか。

How many times a month do you watch movies?

  • 去年は1年に2回、国へ帰りました。

    きょねんはいちねんににかい、くにへかえりました。

Last year I went back to my country twice in the year.

  • わたしはあまり外で食べません。1か月に1回ぐらいです。

    わたしはあまりそとでたべません。いっかげつにいっかいぐらいです。

I don't eat out very much. It's about once a month.

  • 1日に8時間ぐらい寝ます。

    いちにちにはちじかんぐらいねます。

I sleep about eight hours a day.

  • 週に2回、スーパーで買い物をします。

    しゅうににかい、スーパーでかいものをします。

I go shopping at the supermarket twice a week.

  • 父は月に1回、髪を切る。

    ちちはつきにいっかい、かみをきる。

My father gets a haircut once a month.

§3Common mistakes

  • Copying the English or Vietnamese word order and putting the count first: ✗ 3回1週間に行きます. In Japanese the period comes first, then に, then the count: ○ 1週間に3回行きます.
  • Adding に after 毎日 / 毎週 / 毎月: ✗ 毎週に3回泳ぎます. Words with 毎 do not take this に. Say ○ 毎週3回泳ぎます or ○ 1週間に3回泳ぎます.
  • Using は or を instead of に for a regular frequency: ✗ 1日を3回飲みます. The period is the unit of counting, so it takes に: ○ 1日に3回飲みます.

§4How it's different from similar grammar

に (point in time)
The time particle に marks the point when something happens: 7時に起きます (I get up at 7), 日曜日に行きます (I go on Sunday). In this pattern, に comes after a length of time and means 'per': 1日に3回 (three times per day). Look at the word before に: a clock time or date means 'at / on'; a period such as 1週間 followed by a count means 'per'.
毎日 / 毎週 / 毎月 (every day / week / month)
毎週 only says that something happens every week: 毎週テニスをします (I play tennis every week). 1週間に2回 also says how many times in that week: 1週間に2回テニスをします (I play tennis twice a week). 毎 words are used without に.

§5How this shows up on the JLPT

In N5 grammar questions (choosing the right form), the blank is usually the particle: 1週間( )2回, with に as the answer and で, を, は as wrong choices. In sentence-building questions, remember the fixed order 'period → に → count → verb'. In listening and reading, 1日に3回 often appears in instructions for medicine or in schedules, so be ready to read 1回 (いっかい), 1か月 (いっかげつ) and 1週間 (いっしゅうかん) correctly.

§6Quick check (3 questions)

  • 1. Choose the particle that fits the blank: わたしは1週間__2回プールで泳ぎます。

    わたしはいっしゅうかん__にかいプールでおよぎます。

  • 2. Which sentence correctly says 'I call my family three times a month'?

  • 3. What does この薬は1日に3回飲みます mean?

    このくすりはいちにちにさんかいのみます。
