〜ごとに
ごとに
Every / each
ごとに has three uses. With a plain noun it means 'for each one' or 'one by one as a unit' (クラスごとに = class by class). With a number it means that something is repeated at that regular interval (15分ごとに = every 15 minutes). With a verb it means 'every time someone does it', and something usually changes little by little.

このバスはじゅうごふんごとにきます。

Structure
Noun + ごとに (クラスごとに, 国ごとに). Number + counter of time, distance, or amount + ごとに (15分ごとに, 1キロごとに). Verb dictionary form + ごとに (会うごとに). No の or に is put before ごとに.

Common mistakes
3
- Putting の or に before ごとに. ✕ クラスのごとに ✕ 3時間にごとに → ○ クラスごとに ○ 3時間ごとに. ごとに attaches directly to the noun or the number.
- Thinking that 1日ごとに and 1日おきに are the same. 1日おきに means 'every other day' (one day is skipped), so it is close to 2日ごとに, not to 毎日. With 分, 時間, and distance, 5分ごとに and 5分おきに usually mean the same, but with 日, 週, 月, and 年 be careful.
- Using the た-form before ごとに. ✕ 会ったごとに → ○ 会うごとに. For 'every time', the verb is in the dictionary form, even when you talk about the past: 会うごとに大きくなっていた.
How it's different from similar grammar
2
- 〜おきに (at intervals of, skipping)
- おきに follows only a number + counter and means 'leaving that much in between'. With minutes, hours, and distance, the two are usually the same: 10分ごとに = 10分おきに. With days, weeks, months, and years they differ: 2日ごとに洗濯する is once in two days, but 2日おきに洗濯する skips two days, so it is once in three days. Also, おきに cannot follow a plain noun: ✕ 国おきに → ○ 国ごとに.
- 〜たびに (every time)
- Verb dictionary form + ごとに and + たびに both mean 'every time', but たびに is much more common for this meaning, and it takes の after a noun: 旅行のたびに写真を撮る (I take photos every time I travel). ごとに is mainly used for regular intervals and units, where たびに cannot be used: ○ 3時間ごとに熱をはかる ✕ 3時間のたびに熱をはかる.
How this shows up on the JLPT
In N3 grammar-choice questions, ごとに is tested against おきに, たびに, and ずつ. Look at what is before the blank: a plain noun such as グループ or 国 takes only ごとに. In reading and listening, numbers matter: 3日ごとに and 3日おきに give different schedules, so check which word is used. In sentence-ordering questions, ごとに comes right after the noun or number, with no particle between them.
Quick check (3 questions)
Choose the word that fits the blank: この時計は、1時間__音が鳴ります。
このとけいは、いちじかん__おとがなります。
Which phrase has almost the same meaning as the part in 「 」? 熱があるときは、「3時間ごとに」体温をはかってください。
ねつがあるときは、「さんじかんごとに」たいおんをはかってください。
Which sentence is correct?
