〜から〜にかけて
から〜にかけて
From ... through ... (a rough range)
Shows a rough range of time or place. Something continues, or happens here and there, through that range. The start and the end are not exact points, so this pattern is common in weather forecasts and news. It is also used for a part of the body (肩から背中にかけて).
今夜から明日の朝にかけて、強い雨が降るでしょう。
こんやからあしたのあさにかけて、つよいあめがふるでしょう。
Heavy rain will probably fall from tonight through tomorrow morning.
Structure
Noun (time / place) + から + noun (time / place) + にかけて. Before a noun: 〜から〜にかけての + noun (3月から4月にかけての時期).

- Using にかけて for an exact schedule with a clear start and end. ✕ 授業は9時から10時半にかけてです → ○ 授業は9時から10時半までです. にかけて is for a rough range, such as seasons, parts of a day, or areas.
- Putting まで before にかけて, or changing the particles. ✕ 夜から朝までにかけて ✕ 夜から朝をかけて → ○ 夜から朝にかけて. The second noun takes にかけて directly.
- Forgetting の before a noun. ✕ 夏から秋にかけて時期 → ○ 夏から秋にかけての時期.
How it's different from similar grammar
2
- 〜から〜まで (from ... to ..., clear limits)
- 〜から〜まで gives a clear start and a clear end: 銀行は9時から3時までです (The bank is open from 9 to 3). 〜から〜にかけて gives only a rough range, and the start and end are vague: 今週の終わりから来週にかけて寒くなる (It will get cold from around the end of this week into next week). For timetables, opening hours, and distances between two exact points, use まで.
- 〜あいだに (at some point during)
- 〜あいだに is used for something that happens once, or is finished, at some point inside a period: 夏休みのあいだに一度国へ帰った (I went back to my country once during the summer vacation). 〜から〜にかけて is usually used for something that continues or happens many times through the range: 7月から8月にかけて暑い日が続いた (Hot days continued from July through August). It is usually not used for a single short event.
How this shows up on the JLPT
In N3 grammar-choice questions, にかけて often appears next to までに, にとって, and について, so look for から + a time or place word before the blank. In sentence-ordering questions, remember the fixed order: noun + から + noun + にかけて (+ の + noun). In reading and listening, it is very common in weather forecasts and news, where it tells you that the time or area is only a rough range.
