〜あいだに

あいだに

at some point while / before a period ends

← All N4 grammar pointsTiếng Việt

A あいだに、B says that B happens at some point between the start and the end of period A. The particle に points to a point in time, just like 3時に. B is not something that continues through the whole period: it is an action you finish, or a change or event that takes place, before A ends. It is often used for things you want to get done while you have the chance.

§1Structure

Verb ている form / dictionary form of state verbs such as いる / ない-form + あいだに、 い-adjective + あいだに、 な-adjective + な + あいだに、 noun + の + あいだに. The main clause is a one-time action or event that happens and finishes inside that period.

§2Examples

  • 日本にいるあいだに、富士山に登りたいです。

    にほんにいるあいだに、ふじさんにのぼりたいです。

I want to climb Mt. Fuji while I am in Japan.

  • 子どもが寝ているあいだに、掃除をしました。

    こどもがねているあいだに、そうじをしました。

I did the cleaning while my child was sleeping.

  • 留守のあいだに、荷物が届きました。

    るすのあいだに、にもつがとどきました。

A package arrived while I was out.

  • 夏休みのあいだに、この本を読んでしまうつもりだ。

    なつやすみのあいだに、このほんをよんでしまうつもりだ。

I intend to finish reading this book during the summer vacation.

  • わたしがいないあいだに、だれか来ましたか。

    わたしがいないあいだに、だれかきましたか。

Did anyone come while I was away?

  • 外が明るいあいだに、犬の散歩に行ってきた。

    そとがあかるいあいだに、いぬのさんぽにいってきた。

I went and walked the dog while it was still light outside.

  • 暇なあいだに、部屋を片付けておこう。

    しばらくあわないあいだに、リンさんはにほんごがとてもじょうずになりました。

While we hadn't seen each other for some time, Linh's Japanese became very good.

§3Common mistakes

  • Using あいだに when the main clause continues through the whole period. 夏休みのあいだに、ずっと国にいました is wrong, because ずっと〜いました is not a one-time action. For something that lasts from start to end, take off に: 夏休みのあいだ、ずっと国にいました.
  • Using the た-form of an action verb before あいだに. 母が出かけたあいだに、ケーキを作りました is wrong. The period is 'while she is out', so use ている, even in a past sentence: 母が出かけているあいだに、ケーキを作りました.
  • Using あいだに for a deadline. あいだに needs a period before it, not a point in time: 5時のあいだに出してください is wrong. For a deadline, use までに: 5時までに出してください.

§4How it's different from similar grammar

あいだ (through the whole period)
Without に, the main action fills the whole period: 赤ちゃんが寝ているあいだ、わたしも横で寝ていました (I slept next to the baby the whole time). With に, the main action is done once, somewhere inside the period: 赤ちゃんが寝ているあいだに、メールを二つ書きました (I wrote two e-mails at some point in that time). Look at the main clause: a continuing form such as 〜ていました goes with あいだ, and a completed action goes with あいだに.
までに (by a deadline)
Both say that an action is completed in time, but they look at time differently. までに follows a point in time that is the limit: 来週の月曜日までに、レポートを書きます (I will write the report by next Monday). あいだに follows a period, and the action happens inside it: 週末のあいだに、レポートを書きます (I will write the report over the weekend).

§5How this shows up on the JLPT

N4 grammar questions often put あいだ and あいだに side by side in the choices. Decide from the main clause: a one-time, finished action or a sudden event (届きました, 来ました, 〜てしまう, 〜ておく) takes あいだに, while ずっと or 〜ていました takes あいだ. In reading passages, 〜ないあいだに / 〜ているあいだに often introduces a change that the writer noticed later. Also check the connection: ている before あいだに, の after a noun, な after a な-adjective.

§6Quick check (3 questions)

  • 1. Choose the word that fits the blank: わたしがシャワーを浴びている__、友だちから電話がありました。

    わたしがシャワーをあびている__、ともだちからでんわがありました。

  • 2. Which sentence uses あいだに correctly?

  • 3. Choose the word that fits the blank: 昼休み__あいだに、銀行へ行ってきます。

    ひるやすみ__あいだに、ぎんこうへいってきます。
