〜うちに(変わる前に)
うちに
while still ... / before it changes
A うちに、B means 'do B while A is still true, before A changes'. The speaker feels that after the change it will be too late, difficult or not as good, so B is often advice, a plan or a request. With the ない-form it means 'before ... happens': 忘れないうちに = before I forget. This is a different use from the うちに that shows a gradual change, as in 話しているうちに仲良くなった.
若いうちに、いろいろな経験をしたほうがいいですよ。
わかいうちに、いろいろなけいけんをしたほうがいいですよ。
You should have many kinds of experiences while you are young.
Structure
Verb dictionary form (state verbs such as いる, ある, できる) / ている form / ない-form + うちに、 い-adjective + うちに、 な-adjective + な + うちに、 noun + の + うちに. The part before うちに is a state that will change some day, and it is not put in the past form. The main clause is usually an action that the speaker wants to do or recommends. 〜うちは means 'as long as it is still ...'.

Common mistakes
3
- Putting the part before うちに in the past form because the whole sentence is about the past. 料理が熱かったうちに食べました is wrong. Keep the non-past form and show the past only at the end: 料理が熱いうちに食べました.
- Using the affirmative form of a change verb. 暗くなるうちに帰りましょう is wrong, because 暗くなる is the change itself, not the state that still continues. Use the ない-form, 暗くならないうちに帰りましょう, or the present state, 明るいうちに帰りましょう.
- Forgetting な after a な-adjective or の after a noun: 元気うちに should be 元気なうちに, and 学生うちに should be 学生のうちに.

- 間 / 間に (during a period)
- 間に only gives a time frame with a clear start and end, without any special feeling: 会議の間に電話が三回鳴った (The phone rang three times during the meeting). うちに shows that the state will change and the chance will be lost, so the speaker wants to act now: 店が開いているうちに、買いに行こう (Let's go and buy it while the shop is still open).
- まえに (before)
- まえに follows the dictionary form and simply gives the order of two actions: 寝るまえに歯をみがきます (I brush my teeth before going to bed). うちに follows the ない-form or a present state and adds the worry that a change may come at any time: 店が閉まらないうちに行きましょう (Let's go before the shop closes). 店が閉まるまえに行きましょう is also correct, but it sounds more neutral.
How this shows up on the JLPT
In N3 grammar questions, the blank is often the form before うちに: the answer is a non-past state (温かい, 元気な, 学生の, いる) or a ない-form (冷めない, 忘れない), never a た-form. Other questions ask you to choose among うちに, 間に, までに and まえに. In reading passages, check the main clause: if it is an action the writer wants to do or recommends, うちに means 'before it changes'; if it is a change such as 〜なった, it is the other うちに ('while doing, gradually').
