〜たって/〜だって(〜ても)
たって/だって
Even if / no matter how (casual 〜ても)
〜たって and 〜だって are the casual spoken forms of 〜ても and 〜でも. They mean 'even if' or 'even though': the result does not change. They are often used with いくら, どんなに, or a question word. A noun + だって also means 'even ...' or '... too', like 〜でも / 〜も. In formal speech and in writing, use 〜ても / 〜でも.

Common mistakes
3
- Attaching たって to the dictionary form or the て-form. Use the た-form + って: ✕ 走るたって / ✕ 走ってって → ○ 走ったって. When the た-form ends in だ, it stays だ: ✕ 読んたって → ○ 読んだって.
- Keeping い on an い-adjective. Change い to く, as in 〜くても: ✕ 高いたって → ○ 高くたって. For the negative, use 〜なくたって: 高くなくたって, 行かなくたって.
- Reading every だって as 'even if'. At the end of a sentence, 〜だって can be hearsay: あしたは雨だって (I hear it will rain tomorrow). At the start of a sentence, だって means 'but / because'. 'Even if' だって comes after a noun or な-adjective in the middle of a sentence: 雨だって行くよ.
How it's different from similar grammar
2
- ても (even if — standard form)
- The meaning is the same; only the style is different. 〜ても / 〜でも can be used anywhere, in speech and in writing: いくら説明しても、分かってもらえませんでした (No matter how much I explained, they did not understand). 〜たって / 〜だって is for casual talk: いくら説明したって、分かってくれないんだ. On the test, written passages mostly use 〜ても, and 〜たって appears in conversations.
- って (quoting / hearsay)
- The quoting って comes after a whole plain-form sentence and tells what someone said: リンさんは先週国へ帰ったって (I hear Linh went back to her country last week), 試験はあしただって (They say the exam is tomorrow). In these sentences って is at the end. 'Even if' 〜たって / 〜だって is followed by a main clause whose result does not change: 試験があしただって、ぼくは心配していないよ (Even if the exam is tomorrow, I'm not worried).
How this shows up on the JLPT
〜たって / 〜だって appears in N3 listening and in conversations inside reading passages. When you hear it, change it to 〜ても / 〜でも in your head: the second half tells you what does not change. Words like いくら, どんなに, and 何回 before it are a strong hint. In grammar-choice questions, check the form: た-form + って, 〜くたって for い-adjectives, and だって after nouns and な-adjectives. Do not confuse it with the hearsay 〜だって at the end of a sentence.
