〜間/〜間に

あいだ/あいだに

while / during (the whole time vs. at some point)

間 is a period of time with a start and an end. A 間、B means that B goes on from the start to the end of A, so B often has ずっと or a form like 〜ていた. A 間に、B means that B happens, or is finished, at some point before A ends. The subjects of A and B can be different people. At N3 it is usually written with the kanji 間, and you must choose between 間 and 間に by looking at the main clause.

夏休みの間、ずっと祖母の家にいました。

なつやすみのあいだ、ずっとそぼのいえにいました。

I stayed at my grandmother's house for the whole summer vacation.

Structure

Verb ている form / dictionary form of state verbs (いる, ある) / ない-form + 間(に)、 い-adjective + 間(に)、 な-adjective + な + 間(に)、 noun + の + 間(に). After 間, the main clause is an action or state that continues through the whole period. After 間に, the main clause is an action or event that happens once inside the period.

Common mistakes

3
  • Choosing 間 or 間に without looking at the main clause. 夏休みの間に、ずっとアルバイトをしていました is wrong, because ずっと〜していました continues through the whole period: say 夏休みの間、ずっとアルバイトをしていました. In the same way, 夏休みの間、友だちが一度遊びに来ました should be 夏休みの間に, because the visit happened only once inside the period.
  • Using the た-form of an action verb before 間 because the sentence is about the past: 母が出かけた間に is wrong. The period is 'while she is out', so keep ている and show the past at the end of the sentence: 母が出かけている間に、ケーキを作りました.
  • Forgetting の after a noun or な after a な-adjective: 授業間 should be 授業の間, and 暇間に should be 暇な間に.

How it's different from similar grammar

2
うちに (while still / before it changes)
間に simply gives a time frame with a clear start and end: 昼休みの間に銀行へ行ってきます (I'll go to the bank during the lunch break). うちに adds the speaker's feeling that the situation will change, and that after the change it will be too late or difficult: 明るいうちに帰りましょう (Let's go home while it is still light). When you want to say 'do it now, before the chance is gone', うちに is the natural choice.
最中に (right in the middle of)
最中に is usually used with actions and activities, and it stresses that something sudden happened right in the middle of them: 試合の最中に雨が降ってきた (It started to rain right in the middle of the match). 間に can also be used with states such as いる or いない: 家にいない間に荷物が届いていた (A package had arrived while I was not home) is natural, but 最中に does not fit a state like this.

How this shows up on the JLPT

In N3 grammar questions (choosing the right form), 間 and 間に appear together as choices, often with うちに and までに. Read the end of the sentence first: ずっと, 〜ていた or 〜ている point to 間, and a one-time action such as 〜てしまった, 〜ておく or 〜たい points to 間に. In sentence-building questions, remember the order: noun + の + 間に, or verb ている + 間に.
