〜最中に
さいちゅうに
right in the middle of (doing)
最中 means the point when an action is most active. A 最中に、B says that B happened right in the middle of A. B is often something sudden that stops or disturbs A, such as a phone ringing or an earthquake. 〜最中だ at the end of a sentence tells the listener that you are busy with something right now.
会議の最中に、携帯電話が鳴ってしまいました。
かいぎのさいちゅうに、けいたいでんわがなってしまいました。
My cell phone rang right in the middle of the meeting.
Structure
Verb ている form + 最中に、 noun + の + 最中に. The verb or noun is an action or activity (会議, 食事, 試験, 電話), not a state. At the end of a sentence it becomes 〜最中だ / 〜最中です ('be right in the middle of ...').

Common mistakes
3
- Using the dictionary form or the た-form before 最中に: 食べる最中に and 食べた最中に are wrong. The action is in progress, so use ている: 食べている最中に.
- Forgetting の after a noun: 会議最中に is wrong, and the correct form is 会議の最中に. (会議中 is a different word, made with the suffix 中, and it needs no の.)
- Using 最中に with a state instead of an action. 日本にいる最中に、富士山に登りました sounds strange, because いる is a state with no 'busiest point'. For a period of a state, use 間に: 日本にいる間に、富士山に登りました.
How it's different from similar grammar
2
- 間 / 間に (during a period)
- 間に gives a neutral time frame and can be used with states as well as actions: 留守の間に友だちが来た (A friend came while I was out). 最中に is usually used with actions and activities, and it stresses that the timing was bad because the action was at its busiest point: 発表の最中に、パソコンが止まった (The computer froze right in the middle of my presentation).
- ているところだ (be in the middle of doing)
- 〜ているところだ simply reports which stage of an action you are at now: 今、レポートを書いているところです (I'm writing the report now). 〜ている最中だ is stronger and often means 'so please don't disturb me'. Also, 最中 can follow a noun + の (食事の最中), but 〜ところだ in this meaning follows only verbs.
How this shows up on the JLPT
In N3 grammar questions, 最中に is tested in two ways: the form before it (ている, or noun + の) and the choice among 最中に, うちに, 間に and たびに. A sudden event in the main clause, such as 電話が鳴った or 地震が起きた, is a strong hint for 最中に. In sentence-building questions, the usual order is 〜している + 最中 + に, or noun + の + 最中 + に.
