JLPT N4

〜ところだ

ところだ

be about to / be in the middle of / have just done

← All N4 grammar pointsTiếng Việt

ところ means 'place', and here it shows which point of an action you are at right now. The form of the verb decides the meaning: dictionary form = just before the action, ている = in the middle of it, た-form = just after it. It is often used to explain your present situation to someone, for example on the phone. Words like これから, 今 and たった今 often appear with it.

§1Structure

Verb dictionary form + ところだ (about to do) / Verb て-form + いる + ところだ (in the middle of doing) / Verb た-form + ところだ (have just done). Only verbs come before ところ. In polite speech だ becomes です.

§2Examples

  • これから晩ご飯を食べるところです。

    これからばんごはんをたべるところです。

I am just about to eat dinner.

  • 今、レポートを書いているところです。

    いま、レポートをかいているところです。

I am in the middle of writing my report right now.

  • たった今、駅に着いたところです。

    たったいま、えきについたところです。

I have just arrived at the station.

  • 「宿題は終わった?」「今やっているところ。」

    「しゅくだいはおわった?」「いまやっているところ。」

"Have you finished your homework?" "I'm doing it right now."

  • 電話がかかってきたとき、ちょうど家を出るところでした。

    でんわがかかってきたとき、ちょうどいえをでるところでした。

When the phone rang, I was just about to leave the house.

  • 母は今、買い物から帰ってきたところだ。

    はははいま、かいものからかえってきたところだ。

My mother has just come back from shopping.

  • 今帰ってきたところなので、まだ何も食べていません。

    いまかえってきたところなので、まだなにもたべていません。

I have only just come home, so I haven't eaten anything yet.

  • 田中さん、今から昼ご飯に行くところですか。

    たなかさん、いまからひるごはんにいくところですか。

Mr. Tanaka, are you about to go to lunch now?

§3Common mistakes

  • Choosing the wrong verb form before ところ. The verb form, not です, carries the time meaning. If you arrived one minute ago, 今、駅に着くところです is wrong because it means 'I am about to arrive'. Say 今、駅に着いたところです.
  • Using ているところ for a state instead of an action in progress. 田中さんは結婚しているところです does not mean 'Mr. Tanaka is married'. For a state, use plain ている: 田中さんは結婚しています. ているところ fits actions you are doing at this moment, such as 料理を作っているところです.
  • Using たところ together with a time that is not 'just now'. 先月日本に来たところです usually sounds strange, because たところ means 'right after'. When the event was days or months ago but still feels recent to you, use たばかり: 先月日本に来たばかりです.

§4How it's different from similar grammar

たばかり (only just did, as the speaker feels it)
たところ is about the real moment right after an action: さっき昼ご飯を食べたところです (I finished lunch a moment ago). たばかり shows the speaker's feeling that not much time has passed, so the real time can be long: この車は去年買ったばかりです (I bought this car only last year). With たところ, a time word like 去年 usually does not fit.
ています (action in progress)
Both can describe an action happening now. 今、部屋を掃除しています simply says what you are doing. 今、部屋を掃除しているところです stresses 'right at this point, I am in the middle of it', so it is often an answer that explains why you cannot do something else yet. Also, ています can show a habit or a state (毎朝走っています), but ているところ cannot.

§5How this shows up on the JLPT

In N4 grammar questions you often have to choose the verb form before ところ. Look for time cues: これから / 今から point to the dictionary form, 今 with an ongoing action points to ている, and たった今 / さっき point to the た-form. In sentence-ordering questions, remember that ところ comes directly after the verb and です / だ comes after ところ. In listening, phone conversations often use this pattern to tell where someone is in a process.

§6Quick check (3 questions)

  • 1. Choose the form that fits the blank: まだ家にいます。これから家を__ところです。

    まだいえにいます。これからいえを__ところです。

  • 2. What does this sentence mean? ちょうど今、昼ご飯を食べたところです。

    ちょうどいま、ひるごはんをたべたところです。

  • 3. Choose the word that fits the blank: 3か月前に日本に来た__なので、まだ日本語がよく分かりません。

    さんかげつまえににほんにきた__なので、まだにほんごがよくわかりません。
