〜(よ)うとする
ようとする
try to / be about to
〜(よ)うとする shows that someone makes an effort or a move to do something, but the action is not finished yet. It has two main meanings: 'try to do' (often the try fails) and 'be just about to do' (the moment right before an action, often with とき or たら). The negative 〜(よ)うとしない means that a person shows no will to do something. It is usually said about other people, often as a complaint.
弟は一人で重い荷物を運ぼうとしています。
おとうとはひとりでおもいにもつをはこぼうとしています。
My younger brother is trying to carry the heavy luggage by himself.

Common mistakes
3
- Using a form other than the volitional form before とする. ✗ ドアを閉めるとした。 ✗ ドアを閉めようにした。 → ○ ドアを閉めようとした。 The particle is と, and the verb must be in the volitional form (〜う / 〜よう).
- Using 〜(よ)うとする for a plan. It shows an action that is already starting, not a plan in your head. ✗ 来年、日本に留学しようとします。 → ○ 来年、日本に留学しようと思っています。 For plans and intentions use 〜(よ)うと思う or 〜つもりだ.
- Using 〜(よ)うとしない about your own will. It describes what you see in another person's behavior, so it usually sounds strange with 私. ✗ 私はお酒を飲もうとしません。 → ○ 私はお酒を飲まないことにしています。 / 飲むつもりはありません。

- 〜てみる (try doing and see)
- 〜てみる means you actually do the action to see what it is like: 新しいくつをはいてみた (I tried the new shoes on; I did put them on). 〜(よ)うとする means you make an effort toward the action, and it is often not completed: 新しいくつをはこうとしたが、小さくて足が入らなかった (I tried to put the new shoes on, but they were too small and my feet did not go in).
- 〜(よ)うと思う (I think I will)
- 〜(よ)うと思う is an intention in your mind; nothing has started yet: 今晩、早く寝ようと思う (I think I will go to bed early tonight). 〜(よ)うとする is a real move toward the action: 早く寝ようとしたが、外がうるさくて眠れなかった (I tried to go to sleep early, but it was noisy outside and I could not sleep).
How this shows up on the JLPT
In N3 grammar questions, a classic pattern is 〜(よ)うとしたとき / 〜(よ)うとしたら + something unexpected happened, so look for a volitional form before the blank or make one. Another common item is 〜(よ)うとしない with a third-person subject (子どもは, 彼は) and a complaining tone. The choices often include 〜てみる, 〜(よ)うと思う, and 〜ようにする, so check whether the action was really done, only planned, or started but not finished. In sentence-ordering questions, と and した are often separate pieces after the volitional verb.
