〜(する)ことがある
することがある
there are times when / sometimes
Dictionary form or ない form + ことがある says that something happens sometimes; it is not regular, but it is not zero. It is used for occasional actions, exceptions to a habit, and things that can happen from time to time. Be careful with the form of the verb: with the た form (行ったことがある) the meaning changes to a past experience, 'have done before'.
私はときどき、朝ご飯を食べないことがあります。
わたしはときどき、あさごはんをたべないことがあります。
There are times when I do not eat breakfast.
Structure

Common mistakes
3
- Using the た form when you mean 'sometimes'. ✗ 私はたまに自分で料理を作ったことがあります。 → ○ 私はたまに自分で料理を作ることがあります。 た form + ことがある is an experience ('have done before'), so it does not normally go with たまに or ときどき.
- Using it with words for high frequency, such as いつも, 必ず, or 毎日. ✗ 私は毎日コーヒーを飲むことがあります。 → ○ 私は毎日コーヒーを飲みます。 〜ことがある is for things that happen only some of the time.
- Using the ます form or adding の before こと. ✗ 遅れますことがあります。 ✗ 遅れるのことがあります。 → ○ 遅れることがあります。 Use the plain dictionary form or ない form directly before こと.
How it's different from similar grammar
2
- 〜たことがある (experience: have done before)
- The only difference in form is the verb before こと, but the meaning is very different. た form: 私は富士山に登ったことがある (I have climbed Mt. Fuji before; an experience at least once in my life). Dictionary form: 私は休みの日に山に登ることがある (I sometimes climb mountains on my days off; it happens now and then).
- 〜がち (tend to)
- 〜ことがある only says that something happens occasionally, good or bad: 忙しい日は、昼ご飯を食べないことがある (On busy days I sometimes do not eat lunch). 〜がち says that something bad happens easily and often, as a tendency: 最近、忙しくて昼ご飯を忘れがちだ (Lately I am busy and tend to forget lunch).
How this shows up on the JLPT
In N3 grammar questions, you often have to choose the verb form before ことがある. Words such as ときどき, たまに, or 〜日は point to the dictionary or ない form ('sometimes'), while 一度 or まだ〜ない point to the た form (experience). In sentence-ordering questions, こと, が (or も), and ある are often separate pieces. In reading passages, 〜こともある often introduces an exception to what the writer has just said, so it helps with questions about what the writer usually does and what happens only sometimes.
