めったに〜ない

めったに〜ない

rarely / hardly ever

めったに〜ない says that something happens very rarely: not zero times, but almost never. It is about frequency (how often), so it is used with verbs, not to show the degree of an adjective. It is stronger than あまり〜ない and weaker than ぜんぜん〜ない. The set phrase めったにない means 'rare, hard to find'.

父はめったに怒りません。

ちちはめったにおこりません。

My father rarely gets angry.

Structure

めったに + negative verb (ない-form / 〜ません). めったに always goes with a negative. Also: noun + は/が + めったにない = 'is rare' (こんなチャンスはめったにない).

Examples

  • この町では、雪はめったに降らない。

    このまちでは、ゆきはめったにふらない。

It hardly ever snows in this town.

  • 子どものころは、めったに病気をしませんでした。

    こどものころは、めったにびょうきをしませんでした。

When I was a child, I was rarely sick.

  • こんなチャンスはめったにないから、ぜひ参加したい。

    こんなチャンスはめったにないから、ぜひさんかしたい。

A chance like this is rare, so I really want to take part.

  • 田中さんはめったに遅刻しない人なのに、今日はまだ来ていない。

    たなかさんはめったにちこくしないひとなのに、きょうはまだきていない。

Tanaka hardly ever comes late, but today he still hasn't arrived.

  • リンさんは、めったに外食しないんですか。

    リンさんは、めったにがいしょくしないんですか。

    あにとはめったにあえませんが、まいしゅうでんわではなします。

I can rarely see my older brother, but we talk on the phone every week.

Common mistakes

3
  • Using めったに with an affirmative verb. めったに needs a negative: ✗ 父はめったに料理をします → ✓ 父はめったに料理をしません.
  • Using めったに for the degree of an adjective. めったに is about how often something happens, so use あまり for 'not very': ✗ このスープはめったに辛くない → ✓ このスープはあまり辛くない.
  • Using めったに when something never happens at all. めったに means it happens once in a while. If you never drink alcohol, say ぜんぜん飲みません (or 一度も飲んだことがありません), not めったに飲みません.

How it's different from similar grammar

2
あまり〜ない (not very / not often)
あまり〜ない can be about frequency, amount or degree, and it only means 'not much'. めったに〜ない is only about frequency, and the number is much smaller. 映画はあまり見ません means 'I don't watch movies much' (maybe once a month). 映画はめったに見ません means 'I hardly ever watch movies' (maybe once or twice a year). For adjectives, only あまり works: あまり高くない.
ぜんぜん〜ない (not at all)
ぜんぜん〜ない makes the negative complete: zero. めったに〜ない leaves a small chance: it does happen, but very rarely. 祖父はぜんぜんテレビを見ない means my grandfather never watches TV. 祖父はめったにテレビを見ない means he watches it only once in a long while.

How this shows up on the JLPT

In N3 grammar questions, めったに is often the answer when the end of the sentence is negative and the meaning is 'rarely'. Check two things: the predicate must be negative, and the sentence must be about how often something happens (with an adjective of degree, あまり is the answer). In reading, めったに〜ない and めったにない (rare) are often used to explain why something is special.
