JLPT N5

あまり〜ない

あまり〜ない

not very / not much / not often

← All N5 grammar pointsTiếng Việt

あまり with a negative means that the degree, amount or frequency is low: 'not very', 'not much', 'not often'. It does not mean zero. At N5, always use あまり together with a negative form. It also makes a negative answer softer: あまり好きじゃありません is a polite way to say that you do not like something. In casual speech it is often pronounced あんまり.

§1Structure

あまり + verb in the negative (〜ません / 〜ませんでした / plain 〜ない). あまり + い-adjective in the negative (〜くないです / 〜くなかったです). あまり + な-adjective + じゃありません / じゃありませんでした. あまり usually comes just before the verb or adjective, or before the object: あまりテレビを見ません and テレビをあまり見ません are both fine.

§2Examples

  • 私はあまりテレビを見ません。

    わたしはあまりテレビをみません。

I don't watch TV very much.

  • この店のコーヒーはあまりおいしくないです。

    このみせのコーヒーはあまりおいしくないです。

The coffee at this shop is not very good.

  • この町はあまりにぎやかじゃありません。

    このまちはあまりにぎやかじゃありません。

This town is not very lively.

  • 昨日はあまり寝ませんでした。

    きのうはあまりねませんでした。

    I didn't sleep much yesterday.

  • その映画はあまりおもしろくなかったです。

    そのえいがはあまりおもしろくなかったです。

That movie was not very interesting.

  • 「お酒をよく飲みますか。」「いいえ、あまり飲みません。」

    「おさけをよくのみますか。」「いいえ、あまりのみません。」

"Do you often drink alcohol?" "No, not very often."

  • 今、お金があまりありません。

    いま、おかねがあまりありません。

I don't have much money right now.

  • 肉はあまり好きじゃない。

    にくはあまりすきじゃない。

I don't like meat very much.

§3Common mistakes

  • Using あまり in an affirmative sentence: ✗ この料理はあまりおいしいです. Make the sentence negative: ○ この料理はあまりおいしくないです. If you want to say 'very', use とても: ○ この料理はとてもおいしいです.
  • Translating 'not very' word for word with とても + negative: 今日はとても寒くないです sounds unnatural. For 'not very', Japanese uses あまり: ○ 今日はあまり寒くないです.
  • Using the wrong negative form after あまり: ✗ あまり高いじゃありません, ✗ あまり静かくないです. The negative follows the normal rules: い-adjective → あまり高くないです, な-adjective → あまり静かじゃありません, verb → あまり行きません.

§4How it's different from similar grammar

ぜんぜん〜ない (not at all)
Both are used with a negative, but the degree is different. あまり〜ない means 'a little, but not much': 昨日はあまり勉強しませんでした (I didn't study much yesterday: maybe 20 or 30 minutes). ぜんぜん〜ない means zero: 昨日はぜんぜん勉強しませんでした (I didn't study at all yesterday).
とても / よく (in affirmative sentences)
とても (very) and よく (often, a lot) are used in affirmative sentences, and あまり〜ない is their usual negative partner. Degree: この本はとてもおもしろいです ↔ この本はあまりおもしろくないです. Frequency: 図書館へよく行きます ↔ 図書館へあまり行きません. So the natural answer to よく〜ますか is いいえ、あまり〜ません.

§5How this shows up on the JLPT

In N5 fill-in-the-blank questions, the end of the sentence is the key. If the sentence ends in a negative such as 〜ません or 〜くないです, look for あまり or ぜんぜん among the choices; if it ends in an affirmative form, あまり is wrong and とても or よく is likely. The opposite type also appears: あまり is already in the sentence and you must choose the negative ending. In short dialogues, いいえ、あまり… is the typical reply to a question with よく or とても.

§6Quick check (3 questions)

  • 1. Choose the word for the blank: このかばんは__高くないです。

    このかばんは__たかくないです。

  • 2. Which sentence is correct?

  • 3. Someone says 「昨日の晩ごはんはあまり食べませんでした。」 How much dinner did this person eat?

    きのうのばんごはんはあまりたべませんでした。
