JLPT N5

ぜんぜん〜ない

ぜんぜん〜ない

not at all

← All N5 grammar pointsTiếng Việt

ぜんぜん with a negative makes the negative complete: 'not at all', 'never', 'nothing'. It is stronger than あまり〜ない. It is also used with a few words that already have a negative meaning, such as ぜんぜん違います (completely different) and ぜんぜんだめです (no good at all). In casual conversation people sometimes say things like ぜんぜん大丈夫, but in textbooks and on the JLPT ぜんぜん goes with a negative.

§1Structure

ぜんぜん + verb in the negative (〜ません / 〜ませんでした / plain 〜ない). ぜんぜん + い-adjective in the negative (〜くないです / 〜くなかったです). ぜんぜん + な-adjective + じゃありません / じゃありませんでした. It is often written in kanji as 全然. ぜんぜん usually comes just before the verb or adjective, or before the object.

§2Examples

  • 私は中国語がぜんぜんわかりません。

    わたしはちゅうごくごがぜんぜんわかりません。

I don't understand Chinese at all.

  • この本はぜんぜんおもしろくないです。

This book is not interesting at all.

  • 昨日はぜんぜん勉強しませんでした。

    きのうはぜんぜんべんきょうしませんでした。

I didn't study at all yesterday.

  • 「テストは難しかったですか。」「いいえ、ぜんぜん難しくなかったです。」

    「テストはむずかしかったですか。」「いいえ、ぜんぜんむずかしくなかったです。」

"Was the test difficult?" "No, it wasn't difficult at all."

  • 今週はぜんぜん暇じゃありません。

I have no free time at all this week.

My father doesn't drink alcohol at all.

§3Common mistakes

  • Using ぜんぜん as 'very' in an affirmative sentence: ✗ このケーキはぜんぜんおいしいです. On the test, ぜんぜん goes with a negative. For 'very', use とても: ○ このケーキはとてもおいしいです. For 'not at all': ○ このケーキはぜんぜんおいしくないです.
  • Forgetting to make the verb negative because ぜんぜん already feels negative: ✗ 英語がぜんぜんわかります. ぜんぜん is not a negative by itself in a full sentence; the verb must be negative too: ○ 英語がぜんぜんわかりません.
  • Using ぜんぜん when you mean 'not much'. ぜんぜん食べませんでした means you ate nothing. If you ate a little, say あまり食べませんでした. Choosing the wrong one changes the meaning, even though both sentences are grammatical.

§4How it's different from similar grammar

あまり〜ない (not very / not much)
Both need a negative, but あまり〜ない leaves a little and ぜんぜん〜ない leaves nothing. 日本語の新聞はあまりわかりません means you understand some of it, but not much. 日本語の新聞はぜんぜんわかりません means you understand none of it. For frequency: あまり行きません (I rarely go) and ぜんぜん行きません (I never go).
何も〜ない (nothing)
何も takes the place of the object and means 'not anything': 昨日は何も買いませんでした (I didn't buy anything yesterday). ぜんぜん is an adverb of degree, so it can also be used with adjectives and with verbs like わかります: ぜんぜん難しくないです, ぜんぜんわかりません. To say that something is 'not difficult at all', use ぜんぜん, not 何も.

§5How this shows up on the JLPT

In the N5 grammar section, ぜんぜん usually appears in fill-in-the-blank questions together with あまり, とても, よく and たくさん. First check the end of the sentence: a negative ending removes とても, よく and たくさん. If both あまり and ぜんぜん are among the choices, the context decides, for example a following sentence such as 一つもありません or 少しだけ食べました. In dialogues, the short answer いいえ、ぜんぜん。 means 'No, not at all.'

§6Quick check (3 questions)

  • 1. Choose the word for the blank: このゲームは__おもしろくないです。

    このゲームは__おもしろくないです。

  • 2. Which sentence is correct as standard (test) Japanese?

  • 3. Lin never eats meat, not even a little. Which sentence says this?
