JLPT N5

ない形(作り方)

ないけい

How to make the ない-form (plain negative)

← All N5 grammar pointsTiếng Việt

The ない-form is the plain negative form of a verb. 行かない means the same as 行きません, but it is the plain style used with friends and family. It is also used inside longer patterns. At N5 you need it for 〜ないでください (please don't) and for plain-form sentences such as 〜ないと思います. At N4 it is the base of 〜なければなりません, 〜なくてもいいです and 〜ないほうがいいです. ない changes like an い-adjective, so the past is 〜なかった.

§1Structure

Group I (u-verbs): change the last u-sound to the a-sound and add ない (書く → 書かない, 泳ぐ → 泳がない, 話す → 話さない, 待つ → 待たない, 死ぬ → 死なない, 遊ぶ → 遊ばない, 飲む → 飲まない, 帰る → 帰らない). Verbs ending in 〜う take わ: 買う → 買わない, 会う → 会わない. Exception: ある → ない. Group II (ru-verbs): drop る and add ない (食べる → 食べない, 見る → 見ない). Group III: する → しない, 来る → 来ない (こない). From the ます-form: Group I changes the i-sound before ます to the a-sound (書きます → 書かない, 買います → 買わない); Group II only changes ます to ない (食べます → 食べない); します → しない, 来ます (きます) → 来ない (こない). Past: 〜ない → 〜なかった.

§3Common mistakes

  • Making the ない-form of verbs that end in 〜う with あ, or dropping the sound: 買あない and 買ない are wrong. These verbs take わ: 買う → 買わない, 会う → 会わない, 使う → 使わない, 言う → 言わない.
  • Following the rule for ある. ある is a Group I verb, but あらない is wrong. Its negative is simply ない: お金がない, 時間がない. The polite negative is regular: ありません.
  • Treating Group I verbs that end in 〜る as Group II, and misreading 来ない. 帰る, 入る, 切る, 知る and 走る are Group I, so 帰ない and 入ない are wrong: 帰らない, 入らない, 切らない, 知らない, 走らない. Also, 来ない is read こない, not きない, although 来ます is きます.

§4How it's different from similar grammar

〜ません (polite negative)
Both are negative, and the difference is the style. 〜ません is polite and ends a sentence: 明日は学校へ行きません. 〜ない is plain. It ends a sentence in casual talk (明日は学校へ行かない), and it is also the form used inside patterns, even in polite sentences: 行かないでください, 行かないと思います. You cannot put ません inside these patterns: 行きませんでください is wrong.
〜くない of い-adjectives
Verbs and い-adjectives both have a negative that ends in ない, but it is made in different ways. A verb changes its last sound: 飲む → 飲まない. An い-adjective changes い to くない: 高い → 高くない. After that, both change in the same way: 飲まなかった, 高くなかった. な-adjectives and nouns use じゃない: 静かじゃない, 学生じゃない.

§5How this shows up on the JLPT

文末を次に置き換える: and 〜ない? with a rising tone is often an invitation ('Won't you ...?'), not just a simple negative.
