Dictionary form (plain non-past): how to make it

← All N5 grammar pointsTiếng Việt

The dictionary form is the form of a verb that you find in a dictionary. It is the plain (casual) form of 〜ます, so it shows the present, the future, or a habit. You use it at the end of a sentence in casual speech. You also need it before many grammar patterns, such as 〜ことができます, 〜ことです and 〜まえに.

§1Structure

Group I: change the い-row sound before ます to the う-row sound: 書きます → 書く, 泳ぎます → 泳ぐ, 話します → 話す, 待ちます → 待つ, 遊びます → 遊ぶ, 飲みます → 飲む, 帰ります → 帰る, 買います → 買う. Group II: change ます to る: 食べます → 食べる, 見ます → 見る. Group III: します → する, 来ます (きます) → 来る (くる).

§2Examples

  • わたしは毎朝コーヒーを飲む。

    わたしはまいあさコーヒーをのむ。

I drink coffee every morning. (plain style)

  • わたしの趣味は山に登ることです。

    わたしのしゅみはやまにのぼることです。

    My hobby is climbing mountains.

  • 寝るまえに、歯をみがきます。

    ねるまえに、はをみがきます。

I brush my teeth before I go to bed.

  • リンさんはピアノを弾くことができます。

    リンさんはピアノをひくことができます。

    Linh can play the piano.

  • 明日、何時に来る?

    あした、なんじにくる?

What time are you coming tomorrow? (casual)

  • 今日は学校へ行く。でも、明日は行かない。

    きょうはがっこうへいく。でも、あしたはいかない。

I'm going to school today. But I'm not going tomorrow.

  • 大学に入るまえに、一年働きました。

    だいがくにはいるまえに、いちねんはたらきました。

Before I entered university, I worked for a year.

  • 兄は料理をすることができません。

    あにはりょうりをすることができません。

    My older brother can't cook.

§3Common mistakes

  • Treating a Group II verb with an い-row sound before ます as Group I. ✗ 起きます → 起く, ✗ 借ります → 借る. These are Group II, so just change ます to る: ○ 起きる, ○ 借りる. You can't tell the group from the ます-form alone, so learn these common ones by heart: 起きる, 見る, 借りる, 浴びる, 降りる, 着る, いる, できる.
  • Treating a Group I verb whose ます-form ends in 〜ります as Group II. ✗ 帰ります → 帰りる, ✗ 入ります → 入りる. These are Group I, so り changes to る: ○ 帰る, ○ 入る. The same is true for 走る, 切る and 知る.
  • Adding です to the dictionary form to make it polite. ✗ 明日、行くです。 The polite form of a verb is the ます-form: ○ 明日、行きます。

§4How it's different from similar grammar

ます-form (polite form)
The ます-form and the dictionary form have the same meaning and the same time (present, future, habit). Only the politeness is different. 毎日、新聞を読みます is polite, so you can say it to a teacher or a stranger. 毎日、新聞を読む is plain, so you say it to friends and family. Before patterns like 〜ことができます and 〜まえに, you always use the dictionary form, even in a polite sentence: 読むことができます, not ✗ 読みますことができます.
ない-form and た-form (the other plain forms)
The dictionary form is only one of the plain forms: the non-past affirmative. For the negative, use the ない-form: 行く → 行かない (don't go). For the past, use the た-form: 行く → 行った (went). Example: 今日は行く。明日は行かない。昨日も行った。

§5How this shows up on the JLPT

N5 does not ask you to 'make the dictionary form' directly. Instead, the grammar questions put a blank before こと, まえに or ことができます, and the choices are different forms of the same verb (撮ります / 撮る / 撮って / 撮り). You must pick the dictionary form. In sentence-ordering questions, remember that the dictionary form comes directly before こと and まえに. In reading and listening, casual conversations between friends use the dictionary form at the end of sentences.

§6Quick check (3 questions)

  • 1. What is the dictionary form of 起きます?

    おきます

  • 2. Which pair (ます-form → dictionary form) is correct?

  • 3. Choose the word that fits the blank: わたしの趣味は写真を__ことです。

    わたしのしゅみはしゃしんを__ことです。
