The plain form is the short form that matches the polite form (〜ます / 〜です). It has two jobs. First, it ends sentences in casual speech with friends and family. Second, it is used inside a sentence before patterns such as 〜と思います, 〜と言いました and 〜から, and before a noun (before a noun, 静かだ becomes 静かな and 雨だ becomes 雨の). In the second job the sentence is still polite, because politeness is decided by the end of the sentence.
§1Structure
Four forms each: non-past / non-past negative / past / past negative. Verb: 行く / 行かない / 行った / 行かなかった (dictionary form, ない-form, た-form, ない-form with ない changed to なかった). Note ある → ない, なかった. い-adjective: 高い / 高くない / 高かった / 高くなかった (no だ). いい → よくない, よかった, よくなかった. な-adjective: 静かだ / 静かじゃない / 静かだった / 静かじゃなかった. Noun: 雨だ / 雨じゃない / 雨だった / 雨じゃなかった. じゃ can also be では.

§3Common mistakes
- Adding だ to an い-adjective, or using じゃない for its negative. ✗ このカメラは高いだ。 ✗ 高いだと思います。 ✗ 高いじゃない (to mean 'not expensive'). An い-adjective is already a plain form without だ, and its negative is 〜くない: ○ 高い, ○ 高いと思います, ○ 高くない。
- Dropping だ after a な-adjective or a noun before と思います / と言いました. ✗ あの町は静かと思います。 ✗ 明日は休みと言いました。 The plain form of 静かです is 静かだ, and of 休みです is 休みだ: ○ 静かだと思います, ○ 休みだと言いました。
- Making the irregular forms by rule. ✗ あります → あらない (○ ない). ✗ いいです → いくない, いかった (○ よくない, よかった). ✗ 行きませんでした → 行かないだった (○ 行かなかった).
§4How it's different from similar grammar
- Polite form (〜ます / 〜です)
- The meaning and the time are the same. Only the politeness is different: 行きます = 行く, 行きません = 行かない, 行きました = 行った, 行きませんでした = 行かなかった. Inside a sentence, before と思います, use the plain form even when you speak politely: ○ 雨が降ると思います. ✗ 雨が降りますと思います is wrong. Before と思います, the polite form is not used.
- Plain style (casual speech)
- 普通形 (plain form) is the name of a word form. 普通体 (plain style) is a way of speaking in which sentences end in the plain form. 明日は雨だと思います has a plain form (雨だ) inside it, but it ends in 〜ます, so it is in polite style. 明日は雨だと思う ends in a plain form, so it is in plain style. Using a plain form in the middle of a sentence does not make you sound casual.
§5How this shows up on the JLPT
In the N5 grammar questions, a blank before と思います, と言いました or から often has both polite and plain choices, such as 来ます / 来る / 来て / 来た. Before と, pick a plain form, and use the meaning of the sentence to choose between 来る and 来た. With な-adjectives and nouns, check that だ is there: 元気だと思います. In sentence-ordering questions, だ comes directly before と. In listening, friends and family speak in plain forms, so you must understand 行かなかった or 暇だった at once.
§6Quick check (3 questions)
1. What is the plain form of 静かでした?
しずかでした
2. Choose the word that fits the blank: この店のラーメンは__と思います。
このみせのラーメンは__とおもいます。
3. Which pair (polite form → plain form) is correct?
