This sentence pattern first gives a topic with は, and then describes one part or one side of that topic with が. 象は鼻が長いです is, word for word, 'As for elephants, the nose is long', that is, 'Elephants have long noses'. Japanese uses this pattern where English uses 'have' or 'has' for the features of people, places and things, and also for how your body feels: わたしは頭が痛いです (I have a headache).
§1Structure
Noun 1 + は + noun 2 + が + い-adjective / な-adjective (+ です). Noun 1 is the topic (a person, animal, place or thing). Noun 2 is a part or one side of noun 1 (body part, color, food, number of something). Examples: 象は鼻が長いです, この町は公園が多いです, この公園は桜が有名です.

§3Common mistakes
- Translating 'have' directly with あります or 持っています. For 'Linh has long hair', リンさんは長い髪があります and リンさんは長い髪を持っています sound unnatural. For features of the body and of places, use は〜が: リンさんは髪が長いです.
- Marking the part with を. An adjective does not take an object, so わたしは頭を痛いです and 弟は足を速いです are wrong. The part that the adjective describes takes が: 頭が痛いです, 足が速いです.
- Using は for both nouns in a plain description. 象は鼻は長いです is not the neutral way to say 'Elephants have long noses'. The second は adds a feeling of contrast ('the nose is long, but something else is not'). In a simple description, keep the pattern: topic + は, part + が.
§4How it's different from similar grammar
- A の B は ... (A's B is ...)
- Both are correct, but the topic is different. 象は鼻が長いです talks about elephants and tells one of their features, so you can go on talking about elephants: 象は鼻が長いです。そして、体が大きいです. 象の鼻は長いです talks about the elephant's nose itself. When you describe what a person, place or thing is like, は〜が is the usual choice.
- 〜が好き / 上手 / わかる / ある (が for the object of a state)
- The shape is the same (A は B が ...), but the role of B is different. In わたしは犬が好きです (I like dogs) and リンさんは日本語が上手です (Linh is good at Japanese), B is the thing that is liked or done well, and it is not a part of A. In リンさんは髪が長いです, B (hair) is a part of A, and the adjective describes B. In both patterns, the noun before the adjective takes が, not を.
§5How this shows up on the JLPT
In the N5 grammar section, this pattern is tested with particle blanks: わたしは おなか( )いたいです, or two blanks such as この店( )パン( )おいしいです. The wrong choices are を, に, で and の, so remember 'topic は, part が'. In sentence-building questions (★), put the topic + は first, then the part + が, and the adjective right before です. With a question word, が is used: どこが痛いですか, 何がおいしいですか. In reading and listening, descriptions such as 背が高くて、髪が短い人 are used to identify a person, so follow which part each adjective describes.
§6Quick check (3 questions)
1. Choose the pair of particles that fits the blanks: 東京( 1 )人( 2 )多いです。
とうきょう( 1 )ひと( 2 )おおいです。
2. What does this sentence tell us? 「この店はコーヒーがおいしいです。」
「このみせはコーヒーがおいしいです。」
3. Which sentence is correct?
