This is the て-form of adjectives and nouns. It joins two or more descriptions in one sentence, like 'and': この部屋は広くて、明るいです. The descriptions usually point in the same direction (both good or both bad). When they are opposite, が (but) is used instead. The first part can also give a light reason for the second part, as in 暑くて、眠れません; that use is studied at N4.
§1Structure
い-adjective: drop the last い and add くて (安い → 安くて, 大きい → 大きくて). いい becomes よくて. Negative: 〜くない → 〜くなくて (辛くない → 辛くなくて). な-adjective: stem + で (静か → 静かで, きれい → きれいで). Noun + で (学生 → 学生で). The tense and the politeness are shown only by the last word of the sentence.

§3Common mistakes
- Joining adjectives with と. と joins nouns only (パンと牛乳). このレストランは安いとおいしいです is wrong. Use the て-form of the first adjective: 安くて、おいしいです. For a な-adjective, 静かときれいです is wrong; say 静かで、きれいです.
- Using the wrong ending for the type of adjective. きれい and 有名 are な-adjectives, so きれいくて and 有名くて are wrong: きれいで, 有名で. い-adjectives do not take で: 安いで is wrong, 安くて is correct. Also, いい does not become いくて: it becomes よくて.
- Joining a good point and a bad point with くて/で when you mean 'but'. For 'This shop is delicious but expensive', この店はおいしくて、高いです usually sounds strange. Use が for a contrast: この店はおいしいですが、高いです.
§4How it's different from similar grammar
- Noun + と + noun (and)
- Both are 'and' in English, but と only joins nouns into a list: 机の上に本とノートがあります (There are a book and a notebook on the desk). To join descriptions, use くて/で: この本は安くて、おもしろいです (This book is cheap and interesting). Even with nouns, when you give two descriptions of one person, you use で, not と: 田中さんは会社員で、30歳です (Mr. Tanaka is an office worker and is thirty years old).
- 〜が、〜 (but)
- くて/で adds a description that points in the same direction: この部屋は広くて、明るいです (This room is big and bright). が joins two descriptions that are opposite: この部屋は広いですが、暗いです (This room is big, but dark). Before が, the first part is a full sentence ending in です or the plain form, not the て-form.
§5How this shows up on the JLPT
In the N5 grammar section, the blank is the first adjective, and the choices mix the endings: 安くて / 安いで / 安いと / 安くで, or 静かで / 静かくて / 静かと. First decide whether the word is an い-adjective, a な-adjective or a noun. Watch out for きれい and 有名, which look like い-adjectives but take で, and for いい → よくて. Some questions ask you to choose between くて and が: check whether the two descriptions point in the same direction or are opposite. In sentence-building questions (★), the くて/で part comes before the last description.
§6Quick check (3 questions)
1. Choose the form that fits the blank: この公園は__、きれいです。
このこうえんは__、きれいです。
2. Which sentence correctly says 'My room is small and dark'?
3. In which sentence does で join two descriptions, like 'and'?
