This が joins two sentences into one. Its first use is 'but': the second part is in contrast with the first part. Its second use is a soft introduction: in すみませんが or 田中ですが, が does not mean 'but'. It only prepares the listener for the question or request that follows. This が comes after a whole sentence, so it is different from the subject particle が that comes after a noun.
§1Structure
Sentence 1 + が、+ sentence 2. At N5, sentence 1 is usually in the polite form: verb 〜ます / 〜ました + が, い-adjective 〜いです + が, な-adjective / noun + です / でした + が. が can also follow the plain form, mainly in writing; then な-adjectives and nouns need だ: 静かだが, 学生だが. Both halves are usually in the same style (polite with polite).

§3Common mistakes
- Attaching が directly to a な-adjective or noun: ✗ この町は静かが、駅から遠いです, ✗ 昨日は休みが、仕事をしました. が follows a complete sentence, so です (or だ in the plain form) is necessary: ○ この町は静かですが、駅から遠いです, ○ 昨日は休みでしたが、仕事をしました.
- Beginning a new spoken sentence with が like the English 'But …': このかばんは高いです。が、買います sounds unnatural in everyday conversation. At N5, use でも at the beginning of a new sentence, or join the two sentences with が: ○ このかばんは高いです。でも、買います。 / ○ このかばんは高いですが、買います。
- Translating the が in すみませんが or 田中ですが as 'but' and getting confused. Here が is only a soft introduction, and there is no contrast. In the same way, do not mix it up with the subject particle: in 雨が降っていますが、出かけます, the first が marks the subject 雨, and the second が means 'but'.
§4How it's different from similar grammar
- 〜けど / 〜けれども
- けど and けれども have the same two uses as が (contrast and soft introduction). The difference is the style. が sounds a little formal and is common in polite speech and in writing: この店は高いですが、おいしいです. けど is the usual choice in conversation, and with friends it follows the plain form: この店は高いけど、おいしい. Plain form + が (高いが、おいしい) is mostly used in writing.
- でも (at the beginning of a sentence)
- が is attached to the end of the first sentence and makes one long sentence: 毎日勉強していますが、漢字は難しいです. でも stands at the beginning of a new sentence, after a full stop: 毎日勉強しています。でも、漢字は難しいです. The meaning is almost the same. でも cannot be put in the middle like が (✗ 勉強していますでも、…), and でも is not used for the soft introduction (✗ すみませんでも、…).
§5How this shows up on the JLPT
In N5 fill-in-the-blank questions, 〜ます_、 or 〜です_、 is followed by choices such as が, から, と and に. Compare the two halves: if they are opposite in meaning (positive and negative, あります and ありません, the same verb with は…は…), choose が; if the first half is the reason for the second, choose から. In sentence-order questions, remember that が、 comes right after です or ます. In reading and listening, すみませんが、 and 〜ですが、 at the beginning tell you that a question or a request is coming next.
§6Quick check (3 questions)
1. Choose the word for the blank: 毎日練習しています__、まだ上手じゃありません。
まいにちれんしゅうしています__、まだじょうずじゃありません。
2. In which sentence is が a soft introduction and NOT 'but'?
3. Which sentence is correct?
