JLPT N5

〜から(理由)

から

because / so

← All N5 grammar pointsTiếng Việt

から comes at the end of the reason and joins it to the result: 'reason から、result'. Note that the order is the opposite of English 'result because reason'. The result part can be a fact, but it can also be a request, an invitation or your own plan: 暑いですから、窓を開けてください. から states the reason clearly and directly, so it is very common in everyday speech.

§1Structure

Reason sentence + から、result. Polite style: 〜ます/〜です + から (行きますから, 暑いですから, 静かですから, 休みですから). Plain style: verb plain form / い-adjective + から (行くから, 暑いから); な-adjective / noun + だ + から (静かだから, 休みだから). To answer どうして: plain form + からです (頭が痛かったからです; な-adjective / noun: 休みだからです).

§2Examples

  • 暑いですから、窓を開けてください。

    あついですから、まどをあけてください。

It's hot, so please open the window.

  • 時間がありませんから、タクシーで行きましょう。

    じかんがありませんから、タクシーでいきましょう。

We don't have time, so let's go by taxi.

  • この店は有名ですから、いつも人が多いです。

    このみせはゆうめいですから、いつもひとがおおいです。

This shop is famous, so there are always a lot of people.

  • 「どうして昨日来ませんでしたか。」「頭が痛かったからです。」

    「どうしてきのうきませんでしたか。」「あたまがいたかったからです。」

"Why didn't you come yesterday?" "Because I had a headache."

  • 疲れましたから、今日は早く寝ます。

    つかれましたから、きょうははやくねます。

I'm tired, so I'll go to bed early today.

  • 静かだから、この図書館が好きです。

    しずかだから、このとしょかんがすきです。

I like this library because it's quiet.

  • 雨が降っているから、今日は出かけない。

    あめがふっているから、きょうはでかけない。

It's raining, so I won't go out today.

§3Common mistakes

  • Leaving out だ after a noun or な-adjective in plain style: ×明日は休みから、映画を見に行く, ×静かから、好きです. Noun + から means 'from' (9時から = from 9 o'clock), so you need だ to make it a reason: 休みだから, 静かだから. In polite style, use ですから: 休みですから.
  • Putting から on the wrong part because English says 'result because reason'. ×タクシーで行きますから、時間がありません means 'I will go by taxi, so I have no time.' から always comes right after the reason: 時間がありませんから、タクシーで行きます.
  • Using a polite form before からです: ×頭が痛かったですからです, ×熱がありましたからです. Before からです, use the plain form: 頭が痛かったからです, 熱があったからです. (You can also stop at から in polite style: 熱がありましたから。)

§4How it's different from similar grammar

ので (because; softer)
Both give a reason, and both can come before a request. から states the speaker's reason directly and strongly: 危ないですから、入らないでください (It's dangerous, so please don't go in). ので sounds softer and more polite, so it is preferred when you explain yourself or ask a favor: 頭が痛いので、早く帰ります (I have a headache, so I'll go home early). The forms are different too: noun / な-adjective + だから, but noun / な-adjective + なので.
から (from: starting point)
When から comes right after a noun of time or place, it means 'from': 9時から働きます (I work from 9 o'clock), 家から駅まで歩きます (I walk from my house to the station). When から comes after a sentence (a verb, an adjective, or noun + だ/です), it means 'because': 9時だから、もう寝ます (It's 9 o'clock, so I'm going to bed). The small だ or です before から tells you which one it is.

§5How this shows up on the JLPT

In N5 Mondai 1, から is tested against が (but), まで and と. Read both halves: if the first half is the reason for the second half, choose から; if the two halves go against each other, choose が. Noun blanks such as 休み( )から test whether you remember だ. In Mondai 2 (sentence ordering), から comes directly after ます/です or a plain form, and the comma after it shows where the first half ends. In listening, an answer that ends with 〜からです tells you that the question was どうして.

§6Quick check (3 questions)

  • 1. Choose the words that fit the blank: 明日はテスト__、今晩勉強します。

    あしたはテスト__、こんばんべんきょうします。

  • 2. Which sentence correctly says 'It's cold, so please close the door'?

  • 3. In which sentence does から mean 'because'?
