〜ので

ので

because / since (soft, polite reason)

← All N4 grammar pointsTiếng Việt

ので comes at the end of the reason and joins it to the result: 'reason ので、result'. It presents the reason as a fact, so it sounds softer and more polite than から. It is often used when you explain your situation, make an excuse, or ask for permission. The part before ので is usually in the plain form, even in a polite sentence.

§1Structure

Plain form + ので: verb (あるので, 行かないので, 遅れたので), い-adjective (高いので, 高かったので). な-adjective / noun + な + ので (静かなので, 休みなので); in the past and the negative, the plain form as it is (静かだったので, 休みじゃないので). In very polite speech, the polite form can also come before ので (〜ますので, 〜ですので).

§2Examples

    ねつがあるので、きょうはやすみます。

I have a fever, so I'll take the day off today.

  • 道が混んでいたので、遅れました。

    みちがこんでいたので、おくれました。

The roads were crowded, so I was late.

  • この辺は静かなので、よく眠れます。

    このへんはしずかなので、よくねむれます。

This area is quiet, so I can sleep well.

  • 明日は休みなので、ゆっくり寝ます。

    あしたはやすみなので、ゆっくりねます。

Tomorrow is a day off, so I'll sleep in.

  • 値段が高かったので、買いませんでした。

    ねだんがたかかったので、かいませんでした。

The price was high, so I didn't buy it.

  • 用事があるので、先に帰ってもいいですか。

    ようじがあるので、さきにかえってもいいですか。

I have something to do, so may I leave before you?

  • 雨が降ってきたので、タクシーで帰った。

    あめがふってきたので、タクシーでかえった。

It started to rain, so I went home by taxi.

  • お酒は飲めないので、ジュースにします。

    おさけはのめないので、ジュースにします。

I can't drink alcohol, so I'll have juice.

§3Common mistakes

  • Using だ, or nothing, between a noun / な-adjective and ので: ✗ 明日は休みだので, ✗ 明日は休みので, ✗ 静かだので. In the present affirmative, だ changes to な: ○ 休みなので, ○ 静かなので. (With から it is the opposite: 休みだから.)
  • Answering どうして with 〜のでです: ✗ 頭が痛かったのでです. ので cannot be followed by です to end an answer. Use 〜からです: ○ 頭が痛かったからです.
  • Keeping な in the past tense: ✗ 昨日は休みなだったので, ✗ 昨日は休みでしたなので. な is only for the present affirmative. In the past, use the plain past form: ○ 昨日は休みだったので, ○ 部屋が静かだったので.

§4How it's different from similar grammar

〜から (because)
Both give a reason. から states the speaker's own reason directly, so it is common in everyday talk and with strong requests: 危ないから、触らないで (It's dangerous, so don't touch it). ので sounds softer and more objective, so it is preferred when you speak politely about your own situation: 電車が遅れたので、遅くなりました (The train was late, so I'm late). The forms differ: 休みだから but 休みなので. Also, a sentence can end in 〜からです, but not in 〜のでです.
〜のに (even though)
The two look alike, and both take な after a noun or a な-adjective (休みなので/休みなのに), but the meanings are opposite. ので leads to the result you expect: 走ったので、間に合いました (I ran, so I was in time). のに leads to a result against what you expect, often with disappointment: 走ったのに、間に合いませんでした (Even though I ran, I wasn't in time).

§5How this shows up on the JLPT

N4 grammar questions test the connection first: noun / な-adjective + なので (not だので). They also put ので next to のに, けれど and から, so read the second half and decide whether it is the expected result (ので) or a surprising one (のに). In sentence-ordering questions, remember that a plain form or 名詞+な comes right before ので. In listening and reading, 〜ので often appears in excuses and polite requests (〜ので、〜てもいいですか/〜ていただけませんか).

§6Quick check (3 questions)

    あしたはしけん__、こんばんははやくねます。

  • 2. Choose the answer that fits the blank. A: どうしてきのう学校を休んだんですか。 B: かぜを__。
