〜なくて

なくて

because ... not / not ... and so

← All N4 grammar pointsTiếng Việt

〜なくて is the negative of the て-form of cause. It means 'something does not happen (or is not so), and because of that ...'. The second part is usually a feeling or a result you cannot control, such as 困りました, 残念です or 安心しました. It is different from 〜ないで, which means 'without doing'.

§1Structure

Verb ない-form: change 〜ない to 〜なくて (わからない → わからなくて, 会えない → 会えなくて, ある → ない → なくて). い-adjective: 〜くない → 〜くなくて (難しくない → 難しくなくて). な-adjective / noun + じゃなくて or ではなくて (静かじゃなくて, けがじゃなくて). The second part is usually a feeling, a state or something you could not do. Noun + じゃなくて is also used to correct something: 'not A, but B'.

§3Common mistakes

  • Using 〜なくて for 'without doing': ✗ 朝ごはんを食べなくて、学校へ行きました. When you do the second action in the state of not having done the first, use 〜ないで: ○ 朝ごはんを食べないで、学校へ行きました. Keep 〜なくて for a reason that leads to a feeling or a state: 朝ごはんを食べなくて、おなかがすきました.
  • Putting a request or an invitation after 〜なくて: ✗ 意味がわからなくて、教えてください. Like the affirmative て-form of cause, 〜なくて is followed by a feeling or a state. For a request, use ので or から: ○ 意味がわからないので、教えてください.
  • Making the form in the wrong way: ✗ 行かないくて, ✗ 静かなくて, ✗ 休みなくて. The い of ない changes to くて (行かない → 行かなくて). な-adjectives and nouns need じゃ or では: ○ 静かじゃなくて, ○ 休みじゃなくて.

§4How it's different from similar grammar

〜ないで (without doing)
〜ないで shows the way the main action is done: 'without doing A, do B'. 辞書を使わないで、作文を書きました (I wrote the composition without using a dictionary). It attaches only to verbs. 〜なくて mainly gives a reason, and the second part is a feeling or a state: 辞書がなくて、困りました (I had no dictionary, so I was in trouble). 〜なくて is also used with adjectives and nouns (高くなくて, 学生じゃなくて).
〜ないので (because ... not)
〜なくて gives a light reason, and the result happens by itself: お金がなくて、買えませんでした (I had no money, so I couldn't buy it). 〜ないので states the reason clearly and can be followed by a request or your own decision: お金がないので、今日は買いません (I have no money, so I won't buy it today); お金がないので、少し貸してください (I have no money, so please lend me some).

§5How this shows up on the JLPT

The classic N4 question gives you 〜なくて and 〜ないで as choices. Read the second half: a feeling or a state (困りました, 残念です, 心配です) → 〜なくて; a chosen action done 'without' something (出かけました, 寝ました) → 〜ないで. Form questions also appear: 行かなくて (not 行かないくて) and 学生じゃなくて (not 学生なくて). In conversations, 名詞+じゃなくて often corrects information: 3時じゃなくて、4時です.

§6Quick check (3 questions)

  • 1. Choose the form that fits the blank: けさは傘を__出かけました。 (This morning I went out without taking an umbrella.)

    けさはかさを__でかけました。

  • 2. Which sentence correctly says 'The bus didn't come, so I was in trouble'?

  • 3. Choose the form that fits the blank: テストはきょう__、あしたですよ。 (The test is not today; it's tomorrow.)

    テストはきょう__、あしたですよ。
