JLPT N4

〜て/〜で(原因・理由)

て/で

because / and so (cause with the て-form)

← All N4 grammar pointsTiếng Việt

The て-form (and noun + で) can show a light cause: 'A happened, and so B.' The cause comes first, and the result follows naturally from it. The result is usually a feeling, a state, or something you could not do. When the second part is a request, an invitation, or your own decision, use から or ので instead.

§1Structure

Verb て-form (聞いて, 遅れて); い-adjective 〜くて (重くて, いい → よくて); な-adjective + で (複雑で); noun + で (台風で, 事故で). For the negative, see 〜なくて. The second part is usually something the speaker cannot control: a feeling (うれしい, びっくりする, 困る, 安心する, 残念だ), a potential verb in the negative (眠れない, 行けなかった), a state, or an event that simply happened. Set phrases of apology and thanks also use it: 遅くなって、すみません/手伝ってくれて、ありがとう.

§2Examples

  • ニュースを聞いて、びっくりしました。

    ニュースをきいて、びっくりしました。

I heard the news and was surprised.

  • 遅くなって、すみません。

    おそくなって、すみません。

    I'm sorry I'm late.

  • このかばんは重くて、一人で持てません。

    このかばんはおもくて、ひとりでもてません。

This bag is so heavy that I can't carry it by myself.

  • 使い方が複雑で、よくわからない。

    つかいかたがふくざつで、よくわからない。

How to use it is complicated, so I don't really understand it.

  • 台風で、電車が止まりました。

    たいふうで、でんしゃがとまりました。

The trains stopped because of the typhoon.

  • 試験に合格できて、うれしい。

    しけんにごうかくできて、うれしい。

I'm happy that I was able to pass the exam.

  • 事故で遅れたんですか。

    じこでおくれたんですか。

Were you late because of an accident?

  • かぜをひいて、旅行に行けませんでした。

    かぜをひいて、りょこうにいけませんでした。

I caught a cold, so I couldn't go on the trip.

§3Common mistakes

  • Putting a request, an invitation or your own decision after the て-form of cause: ✗ 危なくて、入らないでください, ✗ 時間がなくて、タクシーで行きましょう. With these endings, use から or ので: ○ 危ないですから、入らないでください, ○ 時間がないので、タクシーで行きましょう.
  • Using から in the set phrases of apology and thanks: ✗ 遅くなったから、すみません, ✗ 手伝ってくれたから、ありがとう. The reason for すみません and ありがとう is given with the て-form: ○ 遅くなって、すみません, ○ 手伝ってくれて、ありがとう.
  • Mixing up the forms of the two kinds of adjectives, or putting the past tense in the middle: ✗ 重いで, ✗ 複雑くて, ✗ 聞いたて. い-adjectives take くて (重くて), な-adjectives and nouns take で (複雑で, 台風で), and only the end of the sentence shows the tense: ○ ニュースを聞いて、びっくりしました.

§4How it's different from similar grammar

〜ので (because)
The て-form gives a light cause, and the result is something that happens by itself: 頭が痛くて、眠れませんでした (My head hurt, and I couldn't sleep). ので states the reason clearly, and it can be followed by a request, a question about permission, or your own decision: 頭が痛いので、帰ってもいいですか (I have a headache, so may I go home?). ✗ 頭が痛くて、帰ってもいいですか is not natural.
〜て、〜て、〜 (actions in order)
The form is the same, so the meaning comes from the second part. When the second part is an action the person chooses to do, the て-form only shows the order: 手紙を読んで、返事を書きました (I read the letter and then wrote a reply). When the second part is a feeling or something outside the person's control, the て-form shows the cause: 手紙を読んで、安心しました (I read the letter and felt relieved).

§5How this shows up on the JLPT

In N4 grammar questions, the blank is often the first half of the sentence, and the choices are different forms (遅れて/遅れるて/遅れたで) or different reason patterns (〜て, 〜ので, 〜から). Look at the end of the sentence: if it is a feeling, a negative potential or すみません/ありがとう, the て-form fits; if it is 〜てください or 〜ましょう, choose から or ので. For noun + で, the JLPT also asks you to tell the cause (雪で遅れた) from the place (図書館で) and the means (バスで).

§6Quick check (3 questions)

  • 1. Choose the form that fits the blank: バスが__、会議に間に合いませんでした。

    バスが__、かいぎにまにあいませんでした。

  • 2. Which sentence is correct?

  • 3. In which sentence does で show a cause?
