〜なくてもいい

なくてもいい

Don't have to / need not

← All N4 grammar pointsTiếng Việt

〜なくてもいい means 'it is all right even if you don't', so it says that something is not necessary. It is the opposite of 〜なければならない (must). It does not forbid the action: the person can still do it if they want to. In casual speech も is often dropped: 行かなくていい.

§1Structure

Tomorrow is a day off, so I don't have to get up early.

  • 「くつを脱がなくてもいいですか。」「はい、そのままでどうぞ。」

    「くつをぬがなくてもいいですか。」「はい、そのままでどうぞ。」

'Is it all right if I don't take off my shoes?' 'Yes, please come in as you are.'

  • 時間がありますから、急がなくてもいいですよ。

    じかんがありますから、いそがなくてもいいですよ。

We have time, so you don't have to hurry.

  • きのうは日曜日だったので、会社に行かなくてもよかったです。

    きのうはにちようびだったので、かいしゃにいかなくてもよかったです。

Yesterday was Sunday, so I didn't have to go to the office.

  • 今日はわたしが払うから、お金は出さなくてもいいよ。

    きょうはわたしがはらうから、おかねはださなくてもいいよ。

I'll pay today, so you don't have to pay anything.

    りょうりはじょうずじゃなくてもいいですから、いっしょにつくりましょう。

You don't have to be good at cooking, so let's cook together.

§3Common mistakes

  • Confusing 'don't have to' with 'must not'. 行かなくてもいいです means going is not necessary. 'You must not go' is 行ってはいけません. So to 行かなければなりませんか (Do I have to go?), the answer 'No, you don't have to' is いいえ、行かなくてもいいです, not いいえ、行ってはいけません.
  • Making the form from ない without changing it: ✗ 行かないてもいい, ✗ 行かなくもいい. Change ない to なくて and then add もいい: ○ 行かなくてもいい.
  • Wrong negative for adjectives: ✗ 広いじゃなくてもいい, ✗ 静かくなくてもいい (for the な-adjective 静か). い-adjectives use 〜くなくても and な-adjectives / nouns use 〜じゃなくても: ○ 広くなくてもいい, ○ 静かじゃなくてもいい.

§4How it's different from similar grammar

〜なければならない (must)
These two are opposites and often appear as a question-and-answer pair. 〜なければならない says the action is necessary: あしたは7時に起きなければなりません (I must get up at 7 tomorrow). 〜なくてもいい says it is not necessary: あしたは早く起きなくてもいいです (I don't have to get up early tomorrow).
〜なくてもかまわない (it doesn't matter if you don't)
The meaning is almost the same: お金は払わなくてもいいです/払わなくてもかまいません (You don't have to pay). 〜なくてもいい is the everyday form. 〜なくてもかまわない is a little more formal and stresses that the speaker does not mind.

§5How this shows up on the JLPT

In N4 grammar-form questions, you often choose among 〜なくてもいい, 〜てはいけない, 〜なければならない and 〜てもいい, so read the reason clause carefully: 'because it is a holiday' or 'because there is time' points to 〜なくてもいい. The form itself is also tested (書かなくて, not 書かないて). In listening task questions, 〜なくてもいいです tells you which task the person can skip, which is often the key to the answer.

§6Quick check (3 questions)

  • 1. Choose B's answer. A: 「あしたも来なければなりませんか。」 B: 「いいえ、__。でも、来たかったら来てもいいですよ。」

    A:「あしたもこなければなりませんか。」 B:「いいえ、__。でも、きたかったらきてもいいですよ。」

  • 2. Which sentence means 'You don't have to write it in kanji'?

  • 3. Choose the form that fits the blank: あしたは試験がないから、今晩は__もいいです。

    あしたはしけんがないから、こんばんは__もいいです。
