JLPT N4

〜んです/〜のです

んです/のです

Explanatory 'the thing is...' / asking for or giving an explanation

← All N4 grammar pointsTiếng Việt

〜んです adds the feeling 'the thing is...'. You use it to explain the reason or background of something that both you and the listener can see or already know about. 〜んですか asks the listener for that kind of explanation, so it shows interest or surprise. んです is spoken; のです is used in writing and formal speech.

§1Structure

Plain form of verb / い-adjective + んです (行くんです, 行かないんです, 行ったんです, 高いんです). な-adjective and noun: change だ to な + んです (静かなんです, 学生なんです); other forms stay plain (静かだったんです, 学生じゃないんです). Do not put ます or です before んです. Question: 〜んですか. Written or formal: 〜のです. Casual: 〜んだ / 〜の.

§2Examples

  • 「どうしたんですか。」「頭が痛いんです。」

    「どうしたんですか。」「あたまがいたいんです。」

    'What's wrong?' 'I have a headache.'

  • すみません、あしたは用事があるんです。

    すみません、あしたはようじがあるんです。

I'm sorry, the thing is I have something to do tomorrow.

  • いい時計ですね。どこで買ったんですか。

    いいとけいですね。どこでかったんですか。

That's a nice watch. Where did you buy it?

  • きのうはパーティーに行きませんでした。仕事が忙しかったんです。

    きのうはパーティーにいきませんでした。しごとがいそがしかったんです。

I didn't go to the party yesterday. I was busy with work, you see.

  • 引っ越したいです。今のアパートは駅から遠くて、不便なんです。

    ひっこしたいです。いまのアパートはえきからとおくて、ふべんなんです。

I want to move. My apartment now is far from the station and inconvenient, you see.

  • 兄は働いていません。まだ学生なんです。

  • 「どうして食べないの?」「あまり好きじゃないんだ。」

    にほんでは、いえにはいるとき、くつをぬぐのです。

In Japan, people take off their shoes when they enter a house. (written, explaining style)

§3Common mistakes

  • Keeping だ after a な-adjective or noun: ✗ 学生だんです, ✗ 静かだんです. Change だ to な: ○ 学生なんです, ○ 静かなんです. Also do not use the polite form before んです: ✗ 行きますんです → ○ 行くんです.
  • Using んです for every sentence. When you simply give new information and there is nothing to explain, use plain です/ます. In a self-introduction, わたしはリンなんです sounds strange, as if you were telling a secret; say わたしはリンです.
  • Asking 〜んですか when nothing is seen or known yet. 〜んですか asks for an explanation of something you noticed, so it can sound too strong or nosy in a neutral question. To a stranger, お国はどちらですか is safer than お国はどこなんですか.

§4How it's different from similar grammar

〜から (reason)
〜から states a reason directly and can join two clauses: 熱があったから、休みました (I had a fever, so I took the day off). 〜んです comes at the end of a sentence and gives the reason softly as background: きのうは休みました。熱があったんです。 After どうして〜んですか, both 熱があったからです and 熱があったんです are good answers. んです can also be used when nobody asked 'why'.
〜ますか (plain question)
雨が降っていますか is a neutral question: you have no idea and just want the fact. 雨が降っているんですか is asked when you noticed something, for example a person coming in with a wet umbrella, and you want to check your guess or hear the explanation.

§5How this shows up on the JLPT

In N4 grammar-form questions, the form before んです is often tested: choose 休みなんです, not 休みだんです or 休みですんです. In sentence-ordering questions, remember that んです comes last, after a plain form. In conversation-style and listening items, どうしたんですか and 〜んですか signal that the next line will be an explanation, often ending in 〜んです.

§6Quick check (3 questions)

  • 1. Choose the form that fits the blank: あしたは休みます。病院へ__んです。

    あしたはやすみます。びょういんへ__んです。

  • 2. Which sentence is correct?

  • 3. 「どうして遅れたんですか。」「バスが来なかったんです。」 What does んです do in the answer?

    「どうしておくれたんですか。」「バスがこなかったんです。」
