どうして/なぜ〜か

どうして/なぜ

why

← All N5 grammar pointsTiếng Việt

どうして and なぜ both ask for a reason: 'why'. They usually come at the beginning of the question, or right after the topic. The answer gives the reason with から, most often in the form 〜からです. どうして is the usual word in conversation, and なぜ sounds a little more formal.

§1Structure

どうして/なぜ + sentence + か (どうして休みましたか). Short form after hearing something: どうしてですか. Answer: plain form + からです (verb / い-adjective: 忙しいからです; な-adjective / noun + だ: 静かだからです, 日曜日だからです), or a polite sentence + から (忙しいですから。). Casual speech: どうして + plain form + の?

§2Examples

  • どうして日本語を勉強していますか。

    どうしてにほんごをべんきょうしていますか。

    Why are you studying Japanese?

  • 「どうして朝ごはんを食べませんでしたか。」「時間がなかったからです。」

    「どうしてあさごはんをたべませんでしたか。」「じかんがなかったからです。」

"Why didn't you eat breakfast?" "Because I didn't have time."

  • 「どうして今日は人が多いですか。」「日曜日だからです。」

    「どうしてきょうはひとがおおいですか。」「にちようびだからです。」

"Why are there so many people today?" "Because it's Sunday."

  • 「どうしてこの公園が好きですか。」「静かだからです。」

"Why were you late for class?" "Because the bus didn't come."

  • どうして泣いているの?

    どうしてないているの?

    Why are you crying?

§3Common mistakes

  • Using a polite form before からです in the answer: ×熱がありましたからです, ×忙しいですからです. Before からです, use the plain form: 熱があったからです, 忙しいからです. If you want to keep the polite form, end the sentence with から: 熱がありましたから。
  • Leaving out だ after a noun or な-adjective in the answer: ×日曜日からです, ×静かからです. 日曜日からです means 'It is from Sunday', not 'Because it is Sunday'. Say 日曜日だからです and 静かだからです.
  • Mixing up どうして (why) with どうやって (how, in what way) and どう (how is it). どうして学校へ行きますか asks for the reason you go. To ask about the way or the means, say どうやって学校へ行きますか (How do you get to school?).

§4How it's different from similar grammar

どうして vs. なぜ vs. なんで
All three mean 'why', and the grammar is the same. どうして is the standard word in polite conversation: どうして遅れましたか. なぜ is more formal and is common in writing, in test questions and in titles: なぜ空は青いのか. なんで is casual and is used with friends and family: なんで来なかったの? In a JLPT reading passage you will mostly see なぜ and どうして.
どうして 〜んですか (asking for an explanation)
どうして遅れましたか is a plain question about the reason, and it is the form you learn first. In real conversation, people often add んです: どうして遅れたんですか. This form shows that the speaker saw or heard something and wants an explanation, so it sounds more natural and more interested. The answer often uses んです too: バスが来なかったんです. んです is an N4 point; at N5, 〜か and 〜からです are enough.

§5How this shows up on the JLPT

In N5 Mondai 1, どうして appears among other question words (どう, どんな, どこ, いつ). The key is the answer line: if B's answer ends with 〜から or 〜からです, the question word is どうして or なぜ. The reverse is also tested: the question has どうして, and you choose 〜からです for the end of the answer. In reading passages, a question such as 'なぜ〜ましたか' asks for a reason, so look for a sentence with から or ので in the text. In listening, どうしてですか is a common short reply, so learn it as one phrase.

§6Quick check (3 questions)

  • 1. Choose the word that fits the blank. A:___昨日来ませんでしたか。 B:頭が痛かったからです。

    A:___きのうきませんでしたか。 B:あたまがいたかったからです。

  • 2. Choose the best answer for B. A:どうして野菜を食べませんか。 B:___。

    A:どうしてやさいをたべませんか。 B:___。

  • 3. Which question asks for a reason?
