なぜなら(ば)〜からだ

なぜなら〜からだ

The reason is that / because

First you say your conclusion or opinion, and then なぜなら introduces the reason, which ends with からだ / からです. It works like 'This is so. The reason is that ...'. It is used mainly in writing, speeches and presentations; in everyday conversation it sounds stiff, and people often say どうしてかというと or just use から instead.

私は毎朝歩いて会社に行きます。なぜなら、健康にいいからです。

わたしはまいあさあるいてかいしゃにいきます。なぜなら、けんこうにいいからです。

I walk to work every morning. The reason is that it's good for my health.

Structure

[Statement or opinion]。なぜなら(ば)、[reason in the plain form] + からだ / からです. Before からだ: verb (かかりすぎるからだ), い-adjective (いいからです), な-adjective / noun + だ (静かだからだ, 休みだからだ). なぜならば is a little more formal. なぜなら usually starts a new sentence after the statement.

Common mistakes

3
  • Not ending the reason with から. After なぜなら, the reason should end with からだ / からです. ✗ なぜなら、健康にいいです / 健康にいいので。 → ✓ なぜなら、健康にいいからです。
  • Using なぜなら to ask a question. なぜなら only introduces an answer. To ask 'why?', use なぜ or どうして: ✗ なぜなら、遅れたんですか → ✓ なぜ遅れたんですか / どうして遅れたんですか.
  • Putting the なぜなら sentence first. The statement comes first, and the reason with なぜなら comes after it: ✗ なぜなら雨が降ったからだ。試合は中止だ。 → ✓ 試合は中止だ。なぜなら、雨が降ったからだ。

How it's different from similar grammar

2
のは〜からだ (the reason ... is that)
Both put the reason after the result. 〜のは〜からだ does it in one sentence: 私が毎日走るのは、体を強くしたいからだ (The reason I run every day is that I want to make my body stronger). なぜなら uses two sentences: 私は毎日走る。なぜなら、体を強くしたいからだ. なぜなら sounds more formal and is typical of essays and speeches.
したがって / そのため (therefore)
The order is opposite. したがって and そのため come after the reason and introduce the result: 雨が強くなった。そのため、試合は中止になった. なぜなら comes after the result and introduces the reason: 試合は中止になった。なぜなら、雨が強くなったからだ. Only なぜなら needs からだ at the end.

How this shows up on the JLPT

In the grammar section, the blank is often at the end of the なぜなら sentence, and からだ / からです is the answer (ので and のに are traps). In the 'grammar in a passage' section, you may have to choose between なぜなら, そのため, つまり and ところが to connect sentences; check whether the next sentence is a reason or a result.
