したがって/そのため

したがって/そのため

therefore / for that reason (formal)

したがって and そのため both mean 'therefore': B follows from A. そのため points back to A as the cause ('because of that'), so it is common for events such as delays, cancellations and changes. したがって sounds more logical and more formal, and it is often used when B is a conclusion you can reason out from A, as in rules, calculations and explanations. In everyday conversation, だから or それで is used instead.

台風が近づいています。そのため、今日の試合は中止になりました。

たいふうがちかづいています。そのため、きょうのしあいはちゅうしになりました。

A typhoon is approaching. For that reason, today's game has been cancelled.

Common mistakes

2
  • Using したがって in casual conversation. It sounds like a textbook or a report. ✗ 「おなかすいた。したがって、何か食べよう。」 → ✓ 「おなかすいた。だから、何か食べよう。」
  • Putting your own invitation or request after したがって/そのため in everyday speech. B is usually a fact or a conclusion, so it sounds unnatural. ✗ 雨が降りそうです。そのため、傘を持っていきましょう → ✓ 雨が降りそうですから、傘を持っていきましょう.

How it's different from similar grammar

2
それで (and so)
それで also shows a result, but it is used in conversation and when you tell your own story: 寝坊しました。それで、バスに乗り遅れました (I overslept. So I missed the bus). そのため and したがって say the same kind of thing in a formal, written way, for example in news: 大雪が降った。そのため、多くの学校が休みになった (Heavy snow fell. Because of that, many schools were closed).
〜にしたがって (as ... changes)
The words look similar, but they are used differently. The conjunction したがって starts a new sentence and means 'therefore'. 〜にしたがって comes right after a noun or a dictionary-form verb, inside one sentence, and means 'as A changes, B changes too': 年をとるにしたがって、体が弱くなる (As you get older, your body gets weaker).

How this shows up on the JLPT

In N3 'grammar in a passage' questions, したがって and そのため appear in formal texts such as notices, reports and news, and you choose them over ところが, ところで or しかも. Check that the second sentence is a result or conclusion of the first. Be careful not to mix up the conjunction したがって with 〜にしたがって, which comes after a noun or verb inside the sentence. In reading, the sentence after したがって often gives the writer's conclusion.
