それで connects two sentences: the first gives a cause or situation, and the second tells what happened as a result. The result is normally a fact, something that happened or is true. It is not normally followed by a request, a command, or an invitation; だから is used for those. As a question, それで asks 'and then what?'
§1Structure
Sentence 1 (cause or situation)。 それで、 Sentence 2 (result). それで is a conjunction that stands at the beginning of a new sentence, usually followed by 「、」. Both polite and plain sentences can come before and after it. In conversation, それで? or それで、どうしましたか is also used alone to ask the other person to continue.

§3Common mistakes
- Following それで with a request, command, or invitation. ✕ 雨が降っています。それで、傘を持っていってください。 → ○ 雨が降っています。だから、傘を持っていってください。 After それで, state a result that is a fact, not something you want the listener to do.
- Using それで in the middle of one sentence like ので or から. ✕ 熱があったそれで休みました → ○ 熱があったので、休みました or ○ 熱がありました。それで、休みました。 それで begins a new sentence.
- Confusing それで with それでは (well then). To start or move on to something, use それでは or では: ✕ それで、授業を始めましょう → ○ それでは、授業を始めましょう。
§4How it's different from similar grammar
- だから (so / therefore)
- Both link a cause to a result. だから (polite: ですから) shows the speaker's own reasoning, and it can be followed by a request, advice, or an opinion: あしたは試験です。だから、今晩は早く寝てください。 それで simply reports what happened as a result, so it is normally followed by a fact: あしたは試験です。それで、今晩は勉強しています。
- それに (besides / moreover)
- The two look alike but do different jobs. それで introduces a result: この店は安いです。それで、いつも込んでいます (This shop is cheap, so it is always crowded). それに adds one more point of the same kind: この店は安いです。それに、店員も親切です (This shop is cheap. Besides, the staff are kind).
§5How this shows up on the JLPT
In N4 grammar-form and text-grammar questions, a blank between two sentences must be filled with the right conjunction: それで (result), それに (addition), それでも (contrary to expectation), or しかし/でも (contrast). Read both sentences and decide the relation before looking at the choices. If the second sentence is a request or an invitation, それで is not the answer. In listening, それで? is a signal that the listener wants the speaker to go on.
§6Quick check (3 questions)
1. Choose the conjunction that fits the blank: ゆうべは遅くまで仕事をしました。__、けさは早く起きられませんでした。
ゆうべはおそくまでしごとをしました。__、けさははやくおきられませんでした。
2. In which sentence is それで used correctly?
3. What is B doing in this conversation? A「きのう、駅で高校のときの先生に会ったんだ。」 B「それで?」
A「きのう、えきでこうこうのときのせんせいにあったんだ。」 B「それで?」
